Amundsen–Scott 南极科考站可能是地球上最孤立的地区。在南半球的夏季，这里有大约 150 名科学家和工作人员，到了冬季人数缩小到了 40 名左右。从 2 月中旬 到 10 月下旬，生活在南极站的人基本上是与世隔绝。他们只能靠自己，没有来自外界的食物、燃料、零部件等的运送。除非发生了最紧急的医疗情况，才会有飞机尝试抵达南极站。虽然南极科考站的工作人员是季节性轮换的，但这里有四名永久居民：Bert，iRobot 的 Roomba 652 扫地机器人，2018 年来到南极站；Ernie，2019 年抵达，型号为 Roomba 690；另外两个扫地机器人 Sam 和 Frodo 稍后抵达。它们做着扫地机器人该做的事情：保持地面清洁。但同时也为工作人员提供了某种安慰作用。为了保护当地生态系统，《南极条约》禁止养宠物、种植植物甚至是泥土。
