🧠 Mental Model #10: The Map Is Not the Territory
The Core Concept: A map, model, or description of reality is never the same as reality itself. Every framework, plan, or mental model is a simplification — useful, but always incomplete. Confusing the model for the real thing leads to bad decisions.
Real-World Application:
In Coding: A flowchart of how your system should work is not the same as how it actually behaves once real users interact with it. Test the real thing, not just the diagram.
In Planning: A business plan looks clean and logical on paper. Reality includes friction, delays, and variables no plan accounts for.
In Communication: The words someone uses to describe their feelings are a simplified map of what's actually going on internally. Listen for what's underneath, not just the literal words.
How to Use It: Hold your models loosely. Use them as guides, not gospel. When reality contradicts your map, trust reality — and update the map.
The map helps you navigate. It never replaces the ground you're walking on.
