The Karnataka Legislative Assembly passed the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Bill, which imposes a 10% tax on temples with annual revenues over Rs.1 crore and 5% on those earning between Rs. 10 lakh and Rs.1 crore.

Karnataka Minister Ramalinga Reddy defended the government's actions, asserting that the funds will be used for dharmic parishad purposes, including supporting economically weaker priests, C-grade temples, and education for priests' children, as per India Today.
