The ICJ rules in favor of Guyana and orders Venezuela to avoid taking actions that change the current situation in Essequibo:

Thus, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) recognizes that Guyana administers and controls the Essequibo territory.

The ICJ further noted that there is a real and imminent risk of irreparable harm to Guyana, and therefore took two provisional measures:

1) Venezuela must refrain from carrying out actions that modify the current situation of the disputed territory.

2) Both parties must avoid actions that aggravate or extend the dispute.
