A protest by Sikh groups in Ambala, Haryana, over the arrest of two youths in the Gursimran Singh Mand case turned violent on Thursday.
Police alleged that some protesters carrying farsas (battle-axes), swords and other sharp weapons attacked personnel while authorities attempted to clear an NH-44 blockade.
At least six police personnel were injured, including DSP Varinder Sharma, who suffered a severe thumb injury. Police used tear gas and lathicharge to disperse the protesters.
The blockade began around 3 PM and was cleared at approximately 8:45โ9 PM IST.

Even after central intelligence agencies flagged two NGOs for allegedly using foreign funds to fuel protests against the strategic Vizhinjam deepwater seaport, the Kerala High Court has set aside the Centreโs decision denying their FCRA renewals.
The court held that peaceful protest cannot be treated as an โundesirable purposeโ under the law and directed authorities to review the cases afresh within three months.
