India is preparing to introduce polymer โน10 and โน20 banknotes, with the first notes potentially entering circulation around FY28, subject to successful RBI field trials.
The government has approved a massive pilot of 2 BILLION polymer notes โ 1 billion each of โน10 and โน20.
Polymer notes can last 2โ4 times longer than conventional paper notes, offering greater durability and potentially reducing the need to frequently replace worn-out currency.
Existing paper notes will continue to remain legal tender. A wider rollout will depend on the results of the field trials.
