Japan has ordered nearly 260,000 residents to evacuate in parts of Kagoshima and Okinawa as Typhoon Dolphin approaches southwestern Japan.

The Category 1 typhoon, packing sustained winds of 144 km/h and gusts of up to 198 km/h, has forced the cancellation of more than 500 flights, while Toyota suspended operations at nine factories.
