Stories Of Courage

This was the story of 'Jadugar' — code name of Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami, Ashoka Chakra (Posthumous) | 9 PARA (SF).

A fearless commando who never waited to be called, he volunteered for every mission. He laughed at death until it finally claimed him in the forests of Kupwara on 3rd Sept in 2015.

Born in Lalkuan, Uttarakhand, into a family with a proud military tradition, he joined 9 PARA in 2002. In a unit where toughness is the norm, he stood apart as one of the finest. In August 2015, Goswami took part in 3 consecutive operations in J&K. In less than two weeks, he and his team eliminated 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists and captured one alive.

His last battle was in Haphruda forest. Two brother soldiers lay bleeding and pinned down. L/ Nk Goswami charged forward. A bullet tore into his thigh, then another into his abdomen, but he kept going. At point blank range he killed two terrorists, helped neutralise the others, and pulled his brothers to safety. Only then did he fall.

For conspicuous gallantry, courage under fire, and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry honour.

As his wife, Bhawna Goswami, said: “It is hard, but good people are needed both in heaven and on earth. That is why God called him.”

A commando. A husband. A father. A legend of the Maroon Beret. L/Nk Mohan Nath Goswami lives on — forever among the bravest of the 🇮🇳Indian Army.
