Why is Bajra Khichdi Offered to Lord Jagannath Every Morning?
There's a heartwarming story behind this tradition. It is said that - In a small village named Kalwa in Nagaur district, Rajasthan, there lived a simple, pure-hearted girl named Karmabai. She was born in 17th Century into a humble family that worshipped Lord Krishna with deep devotion.
Karmabai's mother passed away when she was just a little child. Her father, Jeevanram Dudi, raised her with love and taught her one simple rule "Before you eat, always offer the first portion of food to Lord Krishna." For Karmabai, these were not just words. In her innocent heart, this became the ultimate truth.
Sadly, after some time, her father also passed away. Left alone, Karmabai knew only one thing - how to cook Bajra khichdi, a simple meal made of Pearl Millet.

Every morning, without worrying about complex rituals, without even bathing, she would lovingly prepare khichdi and place it before her Lord Krishna, waiting for him to eat. In her pure, childlike faith, she truly believed that Krishna himself would come & accept her offering.
And the miracle happened - Touched by her unwavering love & innocent devotion, Lord Krishna, in the form of a small child, would come to her home & eat the Bajra khichdi she had prepared. (Just like a child visiting his mother, to enjoy the food she had made with her whole heart.) This became a daily divine routine Karmabai cooking with love, Krishna coming to eat with joy.
After sometime she moved to Jagannath Puri, Odisha. There too, Karmabai continued her daily offering of Bajra khichdi to Lord Jagannath. But here, something unusual happened.
A visiting saint saw Karmabai preparing food without first bathing or following the rituals. He scolded her & told her that without following proper purification, her offering would not be accepted by the Lord. Karmabai, with humility, accepted his advice & the next morning, she took her bath & performed all the formalities before cooking.

But that day, when Lord Jagannath appeared, He came late. his clothes were hurriedly worn, & he seemed out of breath. He said, "Mother, you were late today. I had to go to the other devotees first. Please, don't delay again!"
That night, the Lord appeared in the saint's dream & reminded him that rituals are not as important as pure love. The Lord preferred Karmabai's innocently prepared bhog over rigid discipline.
From that day, Karmabai returned to her original way of offering - waking up & directly preparing Bajra khichdi with deep love, exactly as she always had. And the Lord was happy.
Years passed, and when Karmabai finally left her physical body in Puri, something deeply emotional happened. When the temple priests opened the doors of Lord Jagannath's sanctum that morning, they found the Lord's idol with tears in his eyes. He had lost his mother, his dearest devotee, the one who fed him Bajra khichdi every day.
The Lord Himself revealed to the priests in his dreams that Karmabai had passed away and asked, "Who will feed me now?"
Since that day, it became a tradition that every morning, the first bhog offered to Lord Jagannath in the temple is Bajra khichdi in eternal remembrance of Karmabai's love.
This offering is still known today as "Karmabai ki Khichdi." - Jai Jagannath Jai Jagannath π
