The installation housed special forces, served as a logistical hub for the Israeli Air Force, and included search-and-rescue teams prepared to recover downed pilots. The base was created with U.S. knowledge, though not direct involvement.

The clandestine base was nearly exposed in early March after an Iraqi shepherd reportedly noticed unusual helicopter activity and alerted authorities. Iraqi troops sent to investigate were allegedly hit by Israeli airstrikes intended to prevent discovery of the site. Iraqi officials said one soldier was killed and two wounded in the incident.

Israeli special forces trained for operations in enemy territory were also stationed at the base.
