The Rat Race: The Illusion of Happiness

We keep running around the same spinning wheel, convinced that if we just run a little faster, earn a little more, buy a little more and climb a little higher, eventually we’ll arrive at happiness.

But the wheel never stops.

The goalpost simply moves.

More money. Bigger house. Better car. Higher status. More possessions. More validation. More distractions.

And when we finally reach the thing we were told would make us happy, we’re already being shown the next thing we supposedly need.

So we keep running.

Round and round.

Calling it progress while remaining inside the same cage.

Perhaps that’s the greatest illusion of the rat race: convincing the prisoner that freedom is waiting for them somewhere outside the prison, while never questioning who built the prison or who taught them what they should desire.

You can’t truly escape a prison if you carry its programming inside your own mind.

Freedom begins when you start questioning what you’ve been taught to value. When money stops being your measure of worth. When possessions stop being your measure of success. When approval stops being your measure of belonging.

The moment you realise that the things you’ve spent your entire life chasing may have been deliberately placed in front of you to keep you running, the wheel starts to lose its power.

And that’s when you start looking behind the curtain.

Not just at the puppets on the stage, but at the strings.

Because perhaps the greatest prison was never the world around us.

Perhaps it was the belief that this was all there is.

Free the mind first.
Then the rest of the prison becomes much easier to see.
