This is how it always works: start extreme, trigger outrage, then retreat just enough to make the final version feel reasonable. By the time people relax, the mechanism is already in place. The real fight is over.

The proposed hate-speech laws scheduled for 2026 arrive in their most severe form imaginable. Shock the public. Flood the debate with fear. Guarantee resistance. Then, when they inevitably “fail” in their current form, the language will be softened, clause by clause, until Australians are encouraged to sigh in relief and accept the compromise.

That relief is the trap.
