This new Australian Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026 has been published, and it’s far worse than most people realise.

On the surface it’s sold as “protection” and “safety,” but that’s always how these things start. Wrap it in moral language, attach it to something no one is allowed to question, and quietly redefine what words like hate, extremism, and harm actually mean. Once those definitions are vague enough, they can be stretched to fit almost anything.

This isn’t just about hate or antisemitism. That’s the Trojan horse. The real danger is the precedent: the government deciding what opinions are acceptable, what questions are allowed, and which narratives are “safe” for public consumption. When speech becomes something you need permission for, it’s no longer free speech — it’s conditional speech.

People need to understand how big this actually is. Once criticism can be reframed as “harmful” or “extremist,” it doesn’t matter how calm, factual, or reasonable you are. Post the wrong thing online, share the wrong article, question the wrong policy, and suddenly you’re not a citizen with an opinion — you’re a problem to be managed.

Digital platforms will become the enforcement layer. Algorithms, reporting systems, compliance departments. No jackboots needed. No knock on the door at first. Just warnings, account suspensions, fines… until eventually the message sinks in: self-censor, or else.

This is how control works in modern democracies. Laws so broad and emotionally charged that people are too afraid to test the boundaries. The result is the same — silence. A population trained to think twice before speaking, and then not speak at all.

They’ll say, “If you’ve done nothing wrong, you’ve got nothing to worry about.” That line has always aged badly.

Because once the government decides what “wrong” means, they also become judge, jury and executioner.

Whether it’s mandatory at the start doesn’t even matter. Once the framework is in place and normalised, they can always circle back later — quietly, incrementally — until it becomes mandatory by law. Same playbook, every time. Slow boil, no alarm bells.
