A missing piece of the puzzle regarding massive success on YouTube for people like Mr. Beast and Lex Friedman is that YouTube "heats" their videos to help them go viral and build a large subscriber base. It's a practice they've done behind the scenes for creators they want to support since the beginning of the platform.

Internally TikTok calls it "heating" the videos. A phrase we should start using to describe the artificially viral content on major platforms that they promote and want to become part of the mainstream online ecosystem. "Boosting" sounds too ordinary. Heating rhymes with cheating. So maybe it's time "heated videos" becomes part of the public lexicon.

A book that recently came out about the history of YouTube called "Like, Comment, Subscribe" details how employees have used this to mint new YouTube celebrities from the start. The employees interviewed for the book all admit this, and it should be common sense that they're putting their thumb on the scales on the back end.

Not to discount the talent of Mr. Beast or anything, but all of his "strategies" of testing 1000 different thumbnails and titles which he credits with his success may have largely been a fools errand because if the YouTube Gods heat your videos, they're going to go mega viral no matter what.

The platform wants a "brand friendly" face to be seen as the mascot, so to speak. And he's that guy at this point in time.

The Search feature, as well as the Recommendation and Up Next algorithms haven't been the same since 2017 for those channels in the news genre, as CEO Susan Wojcicki admits, it hurts ordinary creators, and heats mainstream media channels, which is why many YouTubers' subscriber counts have been stagnant for years, while the mainstream channels that had embarrassingly low numbers pre-2017 quickly skyrocketed.
