βœ…El Salvador has become the first country in central America and the third in all Americas to get the malaria-free certificate from the World Health Organization (WHO) in recent years.

βœ…The only other countries in the WHO Regions of Americas to have eliminated malaria in recent years are Paraguay (2018) and Argentina (2019).

β–ͺ️High Burden to High Impact (HBHI) initiative:

βœ…Initiated by WHO in 11 high malaria burden countries, including India.
βœ…In India, Implementation has been started in four states i.e. West Bengal and Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

βœ…Coral polyps are mostly found in the tropical regions between Tropica of cancer and Tropic of Capricorn. Generally, most of the reefs are formed on the eastern shores of the continents. However, there are some marginal belts of corals between the subtropical regions.

β–ͺ️Why coral reefs are important?

1. Coral reefs are the natural protective barrier against the strong tropical storms.
2. They are the home to countless marine animals.
3. On average, 400 million people depend on the fisheries of corals for food and income.
4. They also attract tourism in many places.
5. The carbonates of calcium produced by corals are used for the manufacturing of cement

βœ…Under the Yemeni constitution, SanaΚ½a is the capital of the country, although the seat of the Yemeni government moved to Aden, the former capital of South Yemen in the aftermath of the Houthi occupation.

Why in News

βœ…Recently, Mt. Sinabung, an active volcano on Indonesia’s Sumatra island has erupted.

βœ…Earlier, other volcanoes of Indonesia- Merapi volcano and Semeru volcano- had erupted.

βœ…Mt. Sinabung (2,600-metre) is located in Karo regency, North Sumatra.

βœ…Sinabung is among more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

βœ…The volcano was dormant for 400 years before exploding in 2010.

βœ…It exploded again in 2014 ,2016 and 2020.

βœ…Recently, Ecuador’s Sangay volcano erupted.

βœ…Sangay volcano is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world and one of Ecuador's most active ones.

βœ…Sangay is the southernmost stratovolcano (a volcano built up of alternate layers of lava and ash) in the northern volcanic zone of the Andes. It is 5230 m high.

βœ…The Andes is the longest above water mountain range in the world and boasts some of the highest peaks.

βœ…Sangay National Park is located in the central part of Ecuador on the Andes mountains' eastern side.

βœ…The Sarasvati River is one of the main Rigvedic rivers mentioned in the scripture Rig Veda and later Vedic and post-Vedic texts.

βœ…The β€˜Sapta Sindhu’ in Rig Veda refers to the rivers Saraswati, Satadru (Sutlej), Vipasa (Beas), Asikni (Chenab), Purushni (Ravi), Vitasta (Jhelum) and Sindhu (Indus).

βœ…Among these, the Saraswati and the Sindhu were major rivers that flowed from the mountains right up to the sea.

βœ…For 2000 years, between 6000 and 4000 B.C., the Saraswati flowed as a great river.
βœ…The river, which had originated from Kapal tirith in the Himalayas in the west of Kailash, was flowing southward to Mansarovar and then taking a turn towards west.

βœ…The flow of Victoria Falls, with a width of 1.7 km and a height of roughly 108 metres, has been reduced to a trickle due to the severe droughts in the southern African region since October 2018 .

βœ…The falls are fed by the Zambezi river and define the boundary between Zambia and Zimbabwe in southern Africa.

βœ…The falls are also referred to as β€œThe Smoke that Thunders” and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

βœ…It is also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park.
βœ… established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and was upgraded into a national park in 1988.
βœ… It was declared as the 37th Tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1999.

βœ…There are 51 Tiger reserves in India.

βœ…The latest addition in this list
is Srivilliputhur Meghamalai Tiger Reserve of Tamil Nadu, which got approval in 2021.

βœ…The Park lies in the Western Ghats and is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

βœ…Rivers:
The Nagarahole River flows through the park, which joins the Kabini River which also is a boundary between Nagarahole and Bandipur Ntional Park.

The vegetation consists mainly of moist deciduous forests with predominating trees of teak and rosewood.

βœ…Fauna:
Asian elephants, chital (spotted deer), Indian mouse deer, gaur, stripe-necked and ruddy mongooses, grey langur, bonnet macaque, Asian wild dog, leopard, tiger, sloth bear among others.

Why news.

βœ…The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) would reopen the Baralacha Pass.
βœ…Baralacha La is a high mountain pass in Zanskar range, connecting Lahaul district in Himachal Pradesh to Leh district in Ladakh.
βœ…Situated along the Leh–Manali Highway, it acts as a water-divide between the Bhaga river and the Yunam river.
βœ…Bhaga river, a tributary of the Chenab river, originates from Surya taal lake, which is situated a few of kms from the pass towards Manali.
βœ…Chandra, a major tributary of the Chenab River, also originates from a glacier in this region.
βœ…The native name of Chenab, "Chandrabhaga", represents the union of Chandra and Bhaga rivers downstream.

βœ…Zaskar Range, also spelled Zanskar, group of mountains in the Himalayas, south-central Asia, of northern India and the western Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

βœ…The Cold Desert of India is situated in the Himalayas and stretches from Ladakh in the north to Kinnaur (in the state of Himachal Pradesh) in the south.

βœ…The region has harsh climatic conditions such as very low rainfall and very high elevation (ranging from 3000 – 5000m Above Sea Level)] that adds to the coldness in its environment.

βœ…Blizzards, snowstorms and avalanches are common.
