In Headlines: Mauritius Oil Spill - A japanese bulk-carrier ship which was carrying fuel oil has split into two parts in south-east Mauritius.

Important Info:

Mauritius is situated just above the Tropic of Capricorn, in the south of Indian Ocean.

Mauritius is a member of the African Union, Indian Ocean Rim Association and the Indian Ocean Commission.

It is also a founding-member of the ‘Small Island Developing States’ (SIDS).

India is Mauritius’s largest trading partner and has been the largest exporter of goods and services since 2007.

Mauritius is the second largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for India after Singapore.

Feni River

▪️The Feni river forms part of the India-Bangladesh border.

▪️It originates in the South Tripura district

▪️The river passes through Sabroom town on the Indian side, and meets the Bay of Bengal after it flows into Bangladesh.

▪️The dispute over the sharing of the river water has been long-standing.

▪️The Union Cabinet has approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Bangladesh to withdraw 1.82 cusec water for Sabroom district in tripura

Danakil Depression

◾️Belongs to northern part of Afar Triangle or Afar Depression in Ethiopia

◾️ It is a geological depression formed as a result of divergence of three tectonic plates in Horn of Africa region

◾️ It is the hottest place on Earth in terms of year-round average temperatures

◾️ Fossils of ancient Hominis like that of Lucy (Australopithecus), etc. were found here

◾️ The area is also famous for Salt Mining

◾️ Magnesium-dominated brines (that cause cells to break down) and an environment with simultaneously very low pH and high salt makes the area uninhabitable to any lifeform

Red Sea

▪️ It (also the Erythraean Sea) is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean, lying between Africa and Asia.

▪️ The connection to the ocean is in the south through the Bab el Mandeb strait and the Gulf of Aden.

▪️ To the north lie the Sinai Peninsula, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Gulf of Suez (leading to the Suez Canal).

▪️ Bordering countries are:
Eastern shore: Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Israel and Jordan (border Gulf of Aqaba)
