On this date last year, the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan contacted the Indian counterpart at 13:35 hours and begged for a ceasefire. This request followed the failure of their operation, Banyan Marsoos, during which their bases were severely damaged, border posts were destroyed, and their electronic warfare, air defense, and artillery systems were targeted simultaneously.

Following the request from the Pakistani DGMO and the assertion that "Indian strategic objectives had been met", the Indian DGMO agreed to a temporary ceasefire commencing at 17:00 hours. The opposing force was in it's knees begging for a truce so that their remaining assets don't get destroyed as well. This arrangement was established bilaterally, "without foreign intervention or mediation".

The ceasefire which was established on the 10th May after the begging of Pakistani DGMO was violated hours later, around 19:00 hours shelling and drone incursions were reported. As the saying goes "Trust a R**d before Pakistan". The response of this violation was given appropriately to the enemy once again their artillery posts and drone launch stations were targeted. At the same time Indian Air defense secured the airspace from Ariel threats. The next day something happened that made the Pakistani DGMO to call and beg for a truce once again and this time for final.

This is a long thread covering the different phases and trends of the Jammu & Kashmir insurgency. I have divided this thread into different sections:

Background of the Kashmir issue
• Wars fought for Jammu & Kashmir:
1947–48 War
1965 War
1999 Kargil War

After that, there is a detailed background of the beginning of the insurgency in J&K:
• Internal disturbances
• Financial crisis
• Lack of preparedness
• Radicalization
• Exodus of Kashmiri Pandits
• J&K declared as a disturbed area
• Formation of Rashtriya Rifles
Insurgency in 1990
• Local population support for foreign terrorists
• Kargil War
• Formation of Army battalions for surrendered militants to join the Indian Army
• Decline of local support for foreign terrorists

Then we will discuss the decline of terrorism from 2008 to 2012:
• Formation of coordinated organizations involving BSF, CRPF, Army, and Police

2012 to 2020 – Rise in militancy again:
• Surgical Strike
• Pulwama Attack
• Abrogation of Article 370
• Pakistan placed on the FATF grey list (June 2018 – October 2022)

New phase of terrorism (2020–2026):
• J&K youth losing interest in militancy
• Near-zero local recruitment in insurgency
• Pakistan forming new organizations for terrorism
• Evidence of Pakistan’s involvement in the Pahalgam attack (2025)
• Operation Sindoor

Finally, the thread will discuss the possible end of the Kashmir insurgency by 2028, as stated by Amit Shah.

Operational Success: Security Forces Neutralize NSCN (Ang Mai) Leadership in Changlang
In a significant tactical win for border security, the Assam Rifles eliminated two high-ranking militants of the NSCN (Ang Mai) faction during a coordinated night operation on May 11, 2026.

Acting on actionable intelligence regarding militants' movement, security forces interdicted a "Naga Army" unit from the Pangsau Pass Command Group in the dense forested terrain of Doimuk Nala, located under the Miao Circle in Arunachal Pradesh. The encounter, which occurred at approximately 8:30 PM, resulted in the elimination of NSCN- ANG MAI, Lt. Col. Umkong (from Nayang village, Tangshang Region) and NSCN-ANG MAI, Sgt. Enu (from Chithok village, Leinong Region), effectively decapitating a key operational cell.
