The bakery that couldn't move its own building
Meet a bakery in Seattle, two miles from the dense neighborhood where the searches were. Two miles is an eternity in proximity terms, and proximity is the one ranking factor you literally cannot edit.
The owner had read that distance-to-searcher drives the local pack — true — and concluded she was stuck. Her rivals sat right downtown.
We couldn't move her building. So we pushed the lever we could: prominence. Reviews, citations, links, brand mentions, press — the signals that tell Google a business deserves to rank beyond its doorstep. Prominence is how you overcome a proximity disadvantage; it's the counterweight.
We ran a hard review and local-PR push: a feature in a Seattle food blog, a neighborhood newsletter mention, fifty new reviews in a quarter.
Three weeks, no movement. Prominence compounds slowly.
By month three she was holding pack positions for "bakery near me" two miles outside her radius — beating closer shops on strength. Foot traffic and pre-orders climbed noticeably; online orders up 35 percent.
The lesson: you can't change proximity, so stop fighting it — pour the effort into prominence instead. Reviews, links and mentions are the only lever strong enough to rank you somewhere you don't physically sit.

The two trust signals nobody could agree on
Meet a personal injury lawyer in Atlanta. Two landing-page ideas on the table for proving local relevance, and the team was split: a fancy embedded Google Map, or written driving-directions content.
The map looked impressive. Drop the embed, show the office pin, done. The directions felt old-fashioned — "from I-285, take exit 18, we're two blocks past the courthouse."
Here's the catch. A map embed is a near-universal widget; everyone has one, so it carries almost no differentiating signal. The written directions name real local landmarks, highways and neighborhoods — unique, indexable text that ties the page to a place.
We did both, but invested in the directions: a genuine paragraph referencing courthouses, interstates and districts he actually served.
Three weeks, flat. Then the page started ranking for neighborhood-plus-service searches the generic map never touched.
Within two months that single page was pulling pack and organic visibility across three Atlanta districts. Case inquiries from the page rose from 5 to 14 a month.
The lesson: an embedded map is table stakes — it differentiates nothing. Written, landmark-rich location content is unique text Google can actually read and rank. Keep the map, but bet on the words.

Я — Head of Retention. И в своём канале разбираю ошибки, из-за которых команды месяцами теряют LTV, даже не замечая этого.

The plumber who thought his GBP did nothing
Meet a plumber in Tampa near-ready to fire his whole local effort. "The Google listing sends me zero website traffic," he said, staring at an analytics dashboard that showed almost nothing from Google Business Profile.
The trap was the measuring stick. His GBP website button pointed at his homepage with no tracking tag, so every click landed in analytics as plain organic or direct — invisible as map-pack traffic. The listing was working; the report just couldn't see it.
The fix wasn't a new campaign, it was honest attribution. We added a tracking parameter to the GBP website link and set up call tracking on the listing's phone button — the button most local customers actually tap instead of the website.
Three weeks later the real picture emerged. The listing was driving 140 phone calls a month and a healthy slice of website visits he'd been crediting to nothing.
Nothing about his marketing had changed. Only the measurement had.
The lesson: an untagged GBP website button is invisible in analytics, and the phone button is invisible entirely without call tracking. Before you judge a local channel dead, make sure you tagged it — most "my GBP does nothing" stories are really tracking failures.

The fake competitors no one could outrank
Meet a garage-door company in San Diego. Three of the top five pack spots were fakes — lead-gen listings with no real address, virtual offices, keyword-stuffed names. Our client sat sixth, behind ghosts.
The default play is to out-optimize: more reviews, better profile, climb past them. We'd have spent months and a fortune trying to outrank businesses that didn't legally exist.
The sharper tool was the redressal form — Google's own mechanism for reporting fake or non-compliant listings, with evidence. Slower-feeling, less glamorous than "build more," and it depends on Google acting.
We documented each fake — no storefront, mismatched names, undeliverable addresses — and filed clean, evidence-backed reports. Then we waited.
Three weeks, nothing. Then two of the three fakes vanished from the pack. Our client rose to third without changing a single thing on his own listing — the competition simply got removed.
With the field cleared, the normal optimization we did on top actually had room to work. Calls climbed from 35 to 70 a month.
The lesson: you don't always out-optimize spam — sometimes you report it. When the businesses above you are fake, the redressal form is a faster, cheaper lever than trying to outrank ghosts. Clear the field before you compete on it.

Google выпустил Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash

The category nobody checks
Meet a med spa owner in Austin who couldn't crack the top three for "botox." Her listing looked perfect. Photos, hours, reviews — all there.
We opened her Google Business Profile and found the problem in eight seconds. Primary category: "Skin Care Clinic." The three businesses above her? All set to "Medical Spa."
Here's the playbook we ran:
— Pull the top three competitors and read their primary category (use a Chrome extension that exposes it, or check the page source for the GCID string)
— List every category they use as secondary
— Match your primary to the one ranking, not the one that "describes" you
— Add up to nine secondary categories, most relevant first
— Never invent — pick only from Google's existing list
Three weeks in, nothing moved. We almost reverted.
Then week four she jumped from page two to position two. Calls went from 11 a week to 34. One field. One dropdown.
The lesson: your primary category is the single biggest ranking lever in the whole profile, and most owners set it once and never look again.
