The electrician who posted his way back
Meet an electrician in Kansas City. Solid 4.7 rating, 90 reviews, drifting downward in the pack for six months with nothing obviously wrong.
We compared his profile to the two above him side by side. His was a museum: claimed, filled out, and then never touched. Theirs showed Google Posts every week — offers, jobs, a panel upgrade with photos.
An untouched profile tells Google the owner stopped caring. Activity is a freshness signal, and his last sign of life was eleven months old.
We set a simple cadence: two posts a week — a recent job with a photo, a seasonal tip, a service highlight — each naming a service and a neighborhood.
Three weeks in, the ranking hadn't moved and he was ready to quit.
Week six, it lifted.
Position 6 to position 3 over two months, profile views up 35%, calls up 24% — all from posting, no links, no new reviews.
The lesson: a Google Business Profile is not a billboard you hang once — it's a feed, and the businesses that feed it weekly outrank the ones that framed it on the wall.

The vet clinic that moved one pin
Meet a veterinary clinic in a sprawling Houston suburb. Good reviews, fair website, ranking great near the building and vanishing three miles out — exactly where most of their would-be clients lived.
A grid scan told the whole story: a tight green bullseye around the clinic, red everywhere the subdivisions actually were. Proximity was carrying them at home and abandoning them in the neighborhoods that mattered.
You can't move a building, but you can build relevance where the people are. We created two neighborhood landing pages for the big residential communities to the west, earned citations and a community sponsorship naming those areas, and gathered reviews that mentioned those subdivisions by name.
For a month the western grid stayed stubbornly red.
Then it thawed, ring by ring.
The green radius pushed from three miles to seven, new-client appointments rose 29%, and most came from the two communities they'd been invisible in.
The lesson: proximity isn't destiny — when you can't move closer to searchers, you build named relevance for their neighborhoods until Google counts you as local to them.

The salon that was fighting itself
Meet a hair salon in Minneapolis. Lovely reviews, two of them — because there were two listings. A second profile had been auto-created years earlier when an old address got crawled, and nobody noticed.
Reviews and ranking signals were split across both. One showed 60 reviews and ranked at position 6; the ghost showed 18 reviews and ranked nowhere, but kept appearing for some searches and sending clients to a dead address.
Google saw two salons with the same name and trusted neither fully.
We identified the duplicate, confirmed which was authoritative, and filed to merge them so the reviews and history consolidated onto one profile.
The merge processed in a week, then nothing visible for another two, and the owner feared we'd broken something.
Week four, the consolidated listing surged.
From 60 reviews to 78 in one place, position 6 to position 2, and the wrong-address complaints stopped overnight. Bookings rose 21%.
The lesson: a duplicate listing isn't harmless clutter — it splits your strength and confuses Google, and merging two weak profiles into one can beat months of new work.
