The 1960 scientific definition of a second shifted from a fraction of the Earth's rotation to a calculated portion of the 1900 tropical year. Our standard of time is no longer pegged to the planet's actual movement, but to a theoretical construct of planetary revolution. If the cycle is no longer the measure, what is?

The tech elite promise a weightless, borderless digital future. But when Beijing chokes off rare-earth magnets and energy rails fracture, the cloud hits the ground very hard. Read the latest Observer dispatch on the collision between AI scaling and physical supply limits.

Thomas Keightley read twenty languages and published his 1837 history of secret societies against his own will. He identified the Assassins and the Templars as mirror images of one another, rooted in the spiritual ideal of the warrior-monk. Who defined the mirror?

„Das Leben ist zu kurz für lange Trübsal. Da haben sie eine schöne Moral. Ob ich sie befolge? Ach nein, die ersten Augenblicke des Schmerzes sind zu heftig. Der Mensch ist mehr Empfindung als Verstand.“

"Life is too short for prolonged grief. There you have a fine moral. Do I follow it? Oh no — the first moments of pain are too fierce. A person is more feeling than reason."

— Frederick the Great, letter to his brother Ferdinand, 1759

―――――――――――――――――――――――

He formulates the stoic maxim. Then admits he cannot live by it.

Der Mensch ist mehr Empfindung als Verstand. A person is more feeling than reason.

The man who held Prussia together against five armies simultaneously — writing to his brother, in grief, confessing that feeling defeats reason.

Is that a weakness? Or the most honest thing a ruler ever wrote?

Death of Viktor Schauberger — Austrian inventor of implosion technology

Schauberger died five days after returning from a forced stay in Texas where American agents reportedly appropriated his water vortex turbine and flying disc designs; witnesses reported his last words included the statement that they had taken everything from him.

Ancient cultures frequently treated the mirror not as a mere optical device, but as a vessel for the soul and a catalyst for scrying. If the reflection truly exposes the shadow self, what remains hidden when we turn away?

What does a secular institution put on its altar?
In 1957 UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld reopened a small room at headquarters in New York. It has no symbols. There's a single beam of light and a six-ton block of iron ore.
He called the stone an altar, dedicated to "the God whom man worships under many names and in many forms."
Across the street works an organisation with consultative status at the UN. It was founded in 1922 as the Lucifer Publishing Company.
Which God has many names?

Francis Bacon made no new scientific discoveries and uncovered no hidden laws of nature. His achievement was the creation of a philosophical framework to establish man's empire over the universe. Does the map of our reality exist because it was discovered, or because it was constructed?

Gerardus van der Leeuw identified the subject-object dichotomy as the core pathology of modern consciousness, a severance that renders genuine religious experience inaccessible to the detached scholar. If the modern method of dissection creates the very distance it claims to bridge, what remains of the original mystery?

Who may lie to whom?
In Plato's Republic, the founding text of Western political thought, the answer is written plainly: "If any one at all is to have the privilege of lying, the rulers of the State should be the persons."
Socrates goes further. The rulers are to arrange marriages through rigged lots, so that the people "accuse their own ill-luck and not the rulers."
Twenty-three centuries later, an egg on a wall in a children's book put it in one line: the question is which is to be master.

Pope John Paul I found dead in his papal apartments — 33 days after election

No autopsy was performed the body was quickly embalmed and witnesses reported he had been holding documents relating to Banco Ambrosiano and the Vatican Bank when found — documents that subsequently disappeared; his personal secretary's account directly contradicted the official version of events.

Proclus defined the Demiurge as a craftsman imposing proportion and wholeness upon a formless void. Emilie Kutash traces these metaphysical mechanics through the Timaeus to explain the architecture of our perceptible reality. If the cosmos is a crafted design, who holds the blueprints?

Death of Rudolf Diesel — vanished from the SS Dresden crossing the English Channel

Diesel boarded the mail steamer Dresden at Antwerp bound for a business meeting in London telling colleagues he would be woken at 6am; his cabin was found undisturbed and his coat folded neatly beneath the deck rail. His accounts later showed his finances near collapse just as licensing disputes over his patents were intensifying with rival manufacturers in Germany and Britain; a body recovered ten days later by a Dutch crew was identified from items in its pockets but returned to the sea before any examination could be made.
In 1871 Albert Pike, Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite, published a handbook for the members of his order.
In it he described the first three degrees as "the outer court or portico of the Temple," where the initiate "is intentionally misled by false interpretations."
"It is not intended that he shall understand them; but it is intended that he shall imagine he understands them."

In 1932, the Reichsarbeitsgemeinschaft proposed a model of Earth as a living, magnetic organism structured like an apple. This manuscript, Weltdynamismus, was absorbed into the fog of wartime and subsequent systematic removal of technical assets. What remains of a physics that viewed a planet as a battery?

The Private Lightning
While municipal boards urge households toward conservation, the conglomerates executing the massive build-out of artificial intelligence are quietly cutting the cord. "Behind-the-meter" generation draws megawatts directly from the source, bypassing the public grid entirely.
The public cooperative is left with decaying lines and rising tariffs, while the new economy carves out private, high-voltage enclaves. It is not a failure of infrastructure. It is administrative triage.
