A new warning about artificial intelligence from Anthropic caused a stir in cybersecurity circles on Tuesday, a day after the company warned that AI models could be months away from self-replicating across the internet.
In a post late Monday, Anthropic raised the possibility that rogue AI could spin up a botnet, spread quickly, fight takedown attempts and even break into data centers to turbocharge its growth.
Some experts said Tuesday that they shared the company's concern, although at least one said the company appeared to be engaging in "vendor exaggeration."
Monday's post, opens new tab fleshed out a warning last month from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who floated, opens new tab the idea that within the next year or even sooner, AI might be able to hijack "the entire internet" with "a persistent botnet."
Cybersecurity experts who pushed back on the doomsday scenario argued that models would be too big to move around efficiently and could not draw on enough computer power to operate independently.
The post made an early attempt to articulate how those challenges could be overcome.
The company said its experiments showed medium-sized AI models with 30 billion parameters or less could already perform many of the individual tasks required for self-replication, even if they struggled to complete the entire process reliably.
Anthropic said the models could then stitch together the required compute by hijacking inexpensive internet-connected devices. It added that the models were able to replicate across a simplified test network.
"A replicator like this would be challenging to shut down, since there's no centralized point to shut off," the company said.
The report adds to broader concerns about the security risks tied to increasingly capable AI systems, including their potential to automate cyberattacks, operate with limited human oversight and circumvent safeguards.
The advances in models have prompted a series of often dire warnings from industry heads and AI company employees about the possibility of severe, even existential, risks of runaway AI development.

Palantir CEO Warns AI Could Predict Your Next Move Before You Make It
Palantir CEO Alex Karp has warned that AI may become capable of predicting the future.
During [THIS] interview with Louis Robson, he explained that AI could predict people’s thoughts and actions within a domestic context.
This is not a theoretical laboratory experiment. It is an evolution of algorithms currently deployed by the US Department of Defense and its allies.
On the battlefield, AI uses massive datasets regarding troop movements, communication bursts and satellite imagery to map out enemy moves before they make it.
Domestically, the same predictive algorithm can predict human behavior by analyzing consumer behavior, digital communication, location telemetry, and biometric responses.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND AI PREDICTING THE FUTURE
The concept of AI predicting human behavior is based on hyper-refined data correlation.
An AI model scans and analyzes users’ micro-behaviors.
These includes precise scrolling speeds, dynamic biometric data from wearables and subtle location shifts. Afterwards, this data is compiled to calculate choices and reactions a person is likely to exhibit.
Karp warns that this creates a domestic landscape where citizens’ internal intent can be monitored without consent.
In this situation, their choices can become known in advance by governing entities or private enterprises . This can enable them to manipulate user reactions. Therefore, strict institutional regulation is essential to counter this.
CORPORATE RIVALRY
He further talked about the corporate rivalry between Silicon Valley labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
Eventually, Karp argues that the human mind might be outsourced to a centralized digital monopoly.
He insists that if predictive behavioral data is going to become a reality, it must remain decentralized and governed by local institutions.
Karp pushes for AI sovereignty.
He notes that consumption-based business models operate as parasites. He accuses them of trying to strip enterprises of their private data and intellectual property.
AI labs may ultimately need to be nationalized due to the unchecked risks and client liabilities they pose. Domestic production does not only pose the risk of government surveillance, it also risks cognitive pathways of the population being manipulated by AI corporates.
CHANGE IN KARP’S STANCE
Historically, Karp has maintained that the military did not use AI tools for mass domestic surveillance on US citizens.
He insisted that defense software was restricted to foreign adversaries in war contexts. By warning against the use of predictive AI in a domestic context, Karp is admitting that AI threats are seeping into society.
Moreover, while Karp made these statements, Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar publicly debunked extreme AI narratives. He said the extreme doomsday prophecies were mass psychosis. This proves that the tech industry is deeply divided.

Even her leftist local newspaper finally admits Ilhan Omar may have married her brother.
👇
New investigative documents released by a state agency have given fresh life to lingering questions about the marital history of Rep. Ilhan Omar and whether she once married a man — possibly her own brother — to skirt immigration laws.
Omar has denied the allegations in the past, dismissing them as “baseless rumors” first raised in an online Somali politics forum and championed by conservative bloggers during her 2016 campaign for the Minnesota House.
But she said little then or since about Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the former husband who swept into her life in 2009 before a 2011 separation.
The questions surfaced again this month in a state probe of campaign finance violations showing that Omar filed federal taxes in 2014 and 2015 with her current husband, Ahmed Hirsi, while she was still legally married to but separated from Elmi.
Although she has legally corrected the discrepancy, she has declined to say anything about how or why it happened.
The new documents also detail the Omar campaign’s efforts to keep the story of her marriage to Elmi out of the press, arguing that detailed coverage would legitimize the accusations and invade her privacy.
Since the recent findings of the campaign finance board that discovered Omar had improperly used campaign money to pay a lawyer to fix her tax filings, the Star Tribune searched public records — including available databases, the marriage and divorce filing, business licenses, university records and other documents — and could find little publicly available information about Elmi.
The search of records could neither conclusively confirm nor rebut the allegation that he is Omar’s sibling.
From August 2019:
Expel her? There's substantial evidence that Ilhan Omar DID marry her brother and committed marriage, tax, immigration, and other crimes. Judicial Watch steps up and demands action from House Ethics Committee.
