Whatever happened to the USSR's only nuclear-powered spy ship?

During the Cold War, the Soviet Union attempted to monitor U.S. ballistic missile tests wherever possible. However, it lacked an extensive network of military bases abroad and the capabilities of its existing spy and reconnaissance ships were limited. The Pacific Ocean, specifically the U.S. test site at Kwajalein Atoll, remained a blind spot for Moscow.

The new nuclear-powered spy ship, the SSV-33 ‘Ural’, whose construction began in the mid-1970s, was designed to fill this gap. At the same time, the ‘Korall’ electronic warfare system, which included ‘Elbrus’ supercomputers, was being developed specifically for it. It was capable of recording a maximum amount of information about a launched missile, including its type, range, weight, number of warheads and even, possibly, the chemical composition of the rocket fuel.

The one-of-a-kind ‘Ural’ was launched in 1983, but it wasn't commissioned until six years later. Numerous faults on board had to be addressed and its electronic systems had to be upgraded. However, breakdowns continued even after the ship was transferred to the Navy and fires in 1990 and 1991 finally put it out of commission. Moreover, there was no money left for repairs in the collapsing USSR.

The ‘Ural’ never made it to the Kwajalein Atoll, managing only to monitor the northern Pacific Ocean for a time. It then served as a floating barracks for about 10 years; in 2001, it was decommissioned and, 18 years later, was scrapped entirely.

A new episode of the project 'Lumumba's Africa' — 'African diaspora: Europe'.

The movement of Africans to Europe has occurred in several stages. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, slave traders forcibly transported people from Africa to the Americas and the Caribbean. In later periods, descendants of formerly enslaved people migrated from the Caribbean to European metropoles.

In the 20th century, during the colonial period and after African nations gained independence, increasing numbers of Africans were sent to Europe to study and work, prompting new waves of migration.

Professor Lumumba emphasises that, today, the African diaspora in Europe is becoming increasingly visible in politics, the economy, and the media, while its financial support remains important for African countries.

📹‘Voices From the Grave’ uncovers the stories of Donbass civilians who died at the hands of Ukrainian forces. Witnesses reveal the truth of their brutal murders.

A search team is looking for the Donbass burial sites of the nationalists’ victims. They also identify the bodies and determine how the people were killed. Most of the deaths are evidence of Ukraine's use of prohibited methods of warfare, and the war crimes it has committed.

‘This is the use of ‘human shield’ tactics, torture and violence, shelling civilian sites, wiping out the civilian population,’ confirms the adviser to LPR Head, Interagency Working Group Field Team director, Anna Soroka.

The documentary was filmed by military filmmakers Olga Kiriy and Artyom Somov. It includes the stories of survivors after the capture of cities by militants, as well as testimony from the killers themselves.

Russian Military Strikes Ukrainian Port with AI-Enabled Geran-4 'Seeker' Drones

On July 12, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that its forces conducted a significant strike on the port of Chernomorsk in Ukraine's Odessa region, utilizing advanced Geran-4 Seeker drones equipped with artificial intelligence.

The attack, aimed at "degrading the enemy's ability to transport weapons and military equipment in the Black Sea combat zone," successfully hit at least four anchored vessels, including a ro-ro ferry, a bulk cargo ship, a patrol ship, and a fishing boat reportedly converted into a mothership for unmanned aerial vehicles.

The "Seeker" variant of the Russian UAV is distinguished by its integration of a computer vision system powered by artificial intelligence. This technology permits the drone to autonomously search for, identify, and lock onto its targets without direct operator intervention.

Meanwhile, the specific characteristics and overall capabilities of the Geran-4 "Seeker" continue to be a subject of analysis, with some sources suggesting improved speed, range, and payload capacity compared to its predecessors.

This is how Italian journalist and writer Vauro Senesi began his anniversary greeting. He attended the ‘RT.Doc: Time of Our Heroes’ film festival in Gorizia as a guest. There, he watched the very films that Europeans are currently forbidden to see.

‘In my country, Dostoevsky is sometimes branded as ‘Putin propaganda.’ And so we have had to engage with your materials in a semi-legal setting. That is, of course, deeply upsetting to me,’

Senesi explained.

And yet, he ended his video on a very positive note: ‘Let the time come when we can freely communicate as we once did and as we surely will again.’

Making a gun from scrap metal or installing Microsoft Windows in a Soviet car - these guys can show you how. For many of them, blogging about their DIY projects is just a hobby. Them have respectable day jobs, but generate ideas that they feel compelled to bring to life. Nikita Poddubnov, a blogger with over a million followers, first came up with a bicycle powered by a chainsaw motor. Later, he made a series about turning a Soviet wreck of a car into an electric vehicle.

Maksim Egorov garners millions of hits with the videos in which he demonstrates how to create metal instruments, installs a bear-proof door, and transforms a log into a vertical grill. The genre of DIY videos is a phenomenon in itself: millions of viewers spend hours watching a person they've never met assembles a contraption no one else needs.
