Ukraine has long been one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Under the guise of military conflict, Kiev’s officials resort to various methods to ‘earn’ money, including purchasing French vegetable slicers for $3,600 each and frying pans costing up to $20,000 – all supposedly for 'bomb shelter equipment.'

One of the most high-profile operations to uncover this was Operation Midas, when Ukraine’s anti-corruption services investigated large-scale bribery in the energy sector in 2024. Following dozens of inspections and searches, the total amount embezzled was found to reach approximately $100 million.

What does corruption look like under Ukraine’s current authorities? And how do corruption scandals affect Western aid to Kiev? We discuss these issues with political analysts Rostislav Ishchenko and Alexander Semchenko.

Watch the new episode of the author's project by Elena Masyuk and Aleksandr Avilov 'The Big Picture' — ‘Looting Ukraine’. Host Elena Norkunaite.

Kenozero National Park in Russia’s Arkhangelsk Region is home to the Great Watershed of Two Oceans. Here, through a system of rivers, water from one lake flows into the Arctic Ocean, while water from another makes its way to the Atlantic.

According to legend, the two lakes were separated by a Water Spirit, as two suitors sought the hand of his daughter, one spirit from the north and the other from the south. They were always bickering with each other, so the Water Spirit refused to marry his daughter to either of them. He divided the lakes to prevent their rivalry from summoning a storm. In reality, however, the lakes were formed naturally over twelve thousand years ago, as the Scandinavian glacier was receding.

Today, Kenozero Park is a strikingly beautiful and vibrant ecosystem, with its untouched landscape, pristine waters — once even harvested for river pearls — and dense forests crisscrossed by ant trails. The people of Kenozero live in harmony with nature and pass down the traditions of the Russian North from generation to generation.

The Great Watershed of Two Oceans and the rich nature of the Russian North: what makes the Kenozero National Park’s ecosystem unique? Find out in episode 37 of ‘Inland Visions’ project: ‘The Nature of Kenozero’.

📹Heartwarming footage of a seal rescue. The animal became entangled in a fishing net near the Baltic Spit. Rescuers from Kaliningrad came to its aid. After being examined by veterinarians, the rescued seal was released back into the sea.

Trash in the sea often kills many of its inhabitants. As ecologists explain, helping a wild animal in its natural environment can be too difficult or even impossible. Learn more about this in the film 'The Seal Empire under Threat' (2022).
