Many of us have attended a statistics course at some point in our lives, yet analyzing our data can still seem daunting. We may know a lot of tests but often we are not quite sure what they are actually doing or how to pick between them. We may know that a P-value <0.05 is usually considered significant but we may not be 100% sure what that actually means. We may also be unsure how to best summarise our data (should I be taking the mean or the median?) or how to best design our experiments (what does it mean that my data points have to be independent?). And what to do when there is more than one variable that may be affecting our outcome of interest (the mystical concept of “controlling” for something)?

This spring, Egypt Scholars is organizing a data analysis course aimed specifically at students and researchers working in biology, both experimentalists and bioinformaticians. The course will be delivered via Zoom and is composed of 10 sessions of about 2.5 hours each, with one session per week. Each week, there will be an exercise to do at home. You will only complete the course if you submit all of the homework on time. Given that the course is free, we are specifically looking for talented and motivated students who couldn’t afford to pay for a course like this. The course will be delivered in Arabic (with terminology in English) but the written materials will be in English.

The course is built around 3 principles:

1) understanding is better than memorization. We won’t ask you to memorize a list of tests. Instead, we will help you understand the basic concepts of data analysis, so that you can see how different types of analyses fit together and have the confidence to keep on learning and discovering on your own. This is not a lecture course: as much as possible, we will not simply give you the right answers. Instead, we will help you discover them for yourself through interactive activities. You will be interacting a lot during each session, both with the instructor and the other participants.

2) theory is pointless without practice. A large proportion of each session will consist of the students doing practical work in R. The participants will be assigned to groups and will perform all of the practical activities within these groups. This is because there is a wealth of research showing that students learn better in teams – if you have to explain the concepts you learn to others, you will see right away if you truly understand them or not!
