Timeless Tales — Ruth 2
This document contains the full discussion thread on Ruth 2, capturing insights about Ruth’s
boldness, humility, cultural context, and spiritual lessons.
1. Sitting Beside the Reapers (Ruth 2:14)
Ruth 2:14 (KJV): 'And Boaz said unto her, At mealtime come thou hither, and eat of the bread, and
dip thy morsel in the vinegar. And she sat beside the reapers: and he reached her parched corn,
and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left.'
Ruth sat with the reapers though she was only a gleaner. This act was bold, culturally unusual, and
a glimpse into her character — confident because Boaz had spoken, regardless of what others
thought.
2. The Bold Ruth
• Left Moab to follow Naomi (Ruth 1:16–17). • Risked gleaning in a foreign field (Ruth 2:2–3). • Sat
beside reapers despite social disapproval (Ruth 2:14). • Proposed marriage to Boaz, surprising him
(Ruth 3:10–11).
3. The Bowed Ruth
Ruth 2:10 (KJV): 'Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him,
Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a
stranger?'
Ruth 3:8 (KJV): 'And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and,
behold, a woman lay at his feet.'
Her humility balanced her boldness — she bowed low while also stepping forward in faith.
4. Ruth’s Physical Appearance
The text does not describe Ruth’s beauty as it does Rachel or Esther. Instead, the focus is on her
virtue and faithfulness. Boaz said: '…for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous
woman.' (Ruth 3:11 KJV)
Proverbs 31:30 (KJV): 'Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD,
she shall be praised.'
5. The Preaching Nugget
Ruth is both brave and bowed. True faith walks with two feet: confidence and contrition. Her story
shows that grace meets us when we are bold enough to claim and humble enough to bow.
Lesson:
Hebrews 10:35 (KJV): 'Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of
reward.'
James 4:6 (KJV): 'But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but
giveth grace unto the humble.'

Ezekiel 12:25

For I am the LORD:
I will speak,

and the word
that I shall speak
shall come to pass;

it shall be no more prolonged:

for in your days,
O rebellious house,
will I say the word,

and will perform it,
saith the Lord GOD.
