😂 Gospel Giggles: “Ahimmie the Hittite Holds Back”
David leaned in close to his men one dark night and whispered:
"Who will go down with me to Saul in the camp?" (1 Samuel 26:6).
Instantly, Abishai’s hand shot up like an eager schoolboy.
"Me! Me! Choose me! I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life!" 💪🔥
Meanwhile, poor Ahimelech the Hittite was standing nearby, nervously kicking at a stone, glancing at Saul’s army of 3,000 snoring soldiers. He cleared his throat and said under his breath:
"Ummh… yeah, I think I’ll just stay right here, but thanks for asking!" 😅
David raised an eyebrow. Abishai was already strapping on his sandals, sharpening his dagger, and humming the Mission Impossible theme. Ahimmie, on the other hand, was edging further back toward the shadows, whispering to himself:
"I mean, seriously, who sneaks into the middle of the king’s camp at night? That’s not bravery… that’s borderline insanity!"
Abishai laughed: “C’mon, Ahimmie! This is history in the making! Don’t you want your name remembered forever?”
Ahimmie muttered: “Look, my mother didn’t raise me to poke sleeping lions. I’ll be here, guarding the—uhh—the bags. Someone’s gotta hold the fort, right?” 🤷♂️
And so off David and Abishai went, tiptoeing like two teenagers sneaking into the kitchen at midnight. They came back with Saul’s spear and water jug, while Ahimmie sat shivering in the bushes, waiting.
When the story was written down, Abishai got mentioned as the bold volunteer.
And Ahimmie? Well… he got one verse. One! No mighty deeds. No glorious testimony. Just his name on record as the guy who said, “Thanks, but no thanks.”
---
🎯 Lesson in the Laughter
Ahimmie the Hittite teaches us something:
Caution is good.
Fear is real.
But when caution + fear = hesitation, you can miss your moment.
Better Abishai’s boldness (even reckless at times) than Ahimmie’s retreat into safety.
📖 “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” (John 11:16 KJV).
So next time the Son of David whispers, “Who will go with me?” don’t sit back polishing your sandals. Step up, even trembling. Better to stumble forward in faith than to sit safe in fear and be forgotten.
