Stop using the wrong tense
🤔 In English, using the wrong tense can completely change the meaning of a sentence 📖 or even make it confusing or incorrect.
😏 Imagine saying ❌ “Did you went?” instead of “✅ Did you go?” it’s a small mistake, but it instantly signals poor grammar and weak communication 🚫
✋🏽 We’ve carefully collected 34 common mistakes and organized them into 5 focused lessons. 💪🏽 Let’s fix your tense mistakes, one smart step at a time.
📝 Lesson¹ The Last Lesson
8. Use "might" not "may" after a past verb
❪✘❫Ailsa told me she may come.
❪✓❫ Ailsa told me she might come.
📔 "May" becomes "might" when the main verb is in the past. Keep the timeline consistent.
❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
9. Use "could" not "can" after a past verb
❪✘❫Ben thought he can win the prize.
❪✓❫ Ben thought he could win the prize.
📔 "Can" changes to "could" in subordinate clauses with past verbs.
❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
10. After "to", use the base verb—not the past
❪✘❫He tried to kicked the ball away.
❪✓❫ He tried to kick the ball away.
📔 "To" is followed by the infinitive (base form), never the past tense.
❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
11. After "have", use the past participle—not the past
❪✘❫I've forgot to bring my book.
❪✓❫ I've forgotten to bring my book.
📔 Use the third form of the verb (past participle) after "have".
❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
12. Use "ought to have" or "should have" for past duty
❪✘❫You ought to come yesterday.
❪✓❫ You ought to have come yesterday.
Also😀
📔 "Must" and "ought to" don’t express past obligation directly—use perfect infinitive.
❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
13. Use the simple past with time expressions
❪✘❫I have seen a good film yesterday.
❪✓❫ I saw a good film yesterday.
📔 Time markers like "yesterday" require simple past—not present perfect.
❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
14. Use the present perfect for present result
❪✘❫ I saw the Parthenon of Athens.
❪✓❫ I have seen the Parthenon of Athens.
📔 Use present perfect when the focus is on the result or experience, not the time.

E-Mail
@Listen_Closely
Email بريد إلكتروني
Email certainly keeps me busy. I never used to write as many letters as I do now. In the good old days before computers, we wrote real letters with paper and envelopes. I wrote one or two letters a week. But now with email, my inbox is never empty. There's always someone mailing me. I would like just one day where I'm free of email. The sad thing is, very few mails I get are interesting. I get loads of spam, junk mail trying to sell me things I don't want. I also get lots of mail from people asking me to do stuff. Do this, do that, reply ASAP. It's too much sometimes. The one good thing about email is that you can get things done quickly. I can email a company in another country and they can mail me back in two minutes.
