Stop using the wrong tense
๐ค In English, using the wrong tense can completely change the meaning of a sentence ๐ or even make it confusing or incorrect.
๐ Imagine saying โ โDid you went?โ instead of โโ
Did you go?โ itโs a small mistake, but it instantly signals poor grammar and weak communication ๐ซ
โ๐ฝ Weโve carefully collected 34 common mistakes and organized them into 5 focused lessons. ๐ช๐ฝ Letโs fix your tense mistakes, one smart step at a time.
๐ Lessonยน The Last Lesson
8. Use "might" not "may" after a past verb
โชโโซAilsa told me she may come.
โชโโซ Ailsa told me she might come.
๐ "May" becomes "might" when the main verb is in the past. Keep the timeline consistent.

9. Use "could" not "can" after a past verb
โชโโซBen thought he can win the prize.
โชโโซ Ben thought he could win the prize.
๐ "Can" changes to "could" in subordinate clauses with past verbs.
โค๏ธ โค๏ธ โค๏ธ โค๏ธ โค๏ธ โค๏ธ โค๏ธ
10. After "to", use the base verbโnot the past
โชโโซHe tried to kicked the ball away.
โชโโซ He tried to kick the ball away.
๐ "To" is followed by the infinitive (base form), never the past tense.

11. After "have", use the past participleโnot the past
โชโโซI've forgot to bring my book.

๐ Use the third form of the verb (past participle) after "have".

12. Use "ought to have" or "should have" for past duty
โชโโซYou ought to come yesterday.
โชโโซ You ought to have come yesterday.
Also๐
๐ "Must" and "ought to" donโt express past obligation directlyโuse perfect infinitive.
โค๏ธ โค๏ธ โค๏ธ โค๏ธ โค๏ธ โค๏ธ โค๏ธ
13. Use the simple past with time expressions
โชโโซI have seen a good film yesterday.
โชโโซ I saw a good film yesterday.
๐ Time markers like "yesterday" require simple pastโnot present perfect.

14. Use the present perfect for present result
โชโโซ I saw the Parthenon of Athens.

Email ุจุฑูุฏ ุฅููุชุฑููู
Email certainly keeps me busy. I never used to write as many letters as I do now. In the good old days before computers, we wrote real letters with paper and envelopes. I wrote one or two letters a week. But now with email, my inbox is never empty. There's always someone mailing me. I would like just one day where I'm free of email. The sad thing is, very few mails I get are interesting. I get loads of spam, junk mail trying to sell me things I don't want. I also get lots of mail from people asking me to do stuff. Do this, do that, reply ASAP. It's too much sometimes. The one good thing about email is that you can get things done quickly. I can email a company in another country and they can mail me back in two minutes.
