Stop using the wrong tense
🤔 In English, using the wrong tense can completely change the meaning of a sentence 📖 or even make it confusing or incorrect.
😏 Imagine saying ❌ “Did you went?” instead of “✅ Did you go?” it’s a small mistake, but it instantly signals poor grammar and weak communication 🚫
✋🏽 We’ve carefully collected 34 common mistakes and organized them into 5 focused lessons. 💪🏽 Let’s fix your tense mistakes, one smart step at a time.
📝 Lesson¹
1. After "did", don't use past tense. Use base form.
❪✘❫Did you went to school yesterday?
❪✓❫ Did you go to school yesterday?
❪✘❫I did not went to school yesterday.
❪✓❫ I did not go to school yesterday.
⚠️Note: After did, always use the base verb (go, eat, play). Not the past form.
📔 Extra Tip: "Did" already shows past tense, so there's no need to repeat it by using a past verb.
📆 Think of it like this: Saying "Did you went" is like saying "Did you did go" it’s too much!
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
2. After "does", don't use verb with -s. Use base form.
❪✘❫Does the gardener waters the flowers?
❪✓❫ Does the gardener watery the flowers?
❪✘❫The man doesn't waters the flowers.
❪✓❫ The man doesn't water the flowers.
⚠️Note: After does, use the base verb. Don't add -s to the verb.
📔 Extra Tip: "Does" already carries the third person singular form. Adding -s again is like wearing two jackets unnecessary and awkward.
EX✔️ Does she play tennis? not❌ Does she plays tennis?
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
3. After "can", "must", "may", use base verb.
❪✘❫Ian can speaks English very well.
❪✓❫ Ian can speak English very well.
⚠️Note: After modal verbs like can, must, may, shall, will, use the base verb.
📔 Extra Tip: Modal verbs are powerful helpers — they already set the tense and mood. Let the main verb stay simple.
EX✔️ She must finish her homework. not❌ She must finishes her homework.
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
4. Wrong tense after past verb.
❪✘❫Rachel asked me what I am doing.
❪✓❫ Rachel asked me what I was doing.
⚠️Note: If the first verb is in past, the second verb should also be in past.
📔 Extra Tip: Keep the timeline consistent. If the main action happened in the past, the related action should match it.
😀 Think of it like storytelling don’t mix past and present unless you’re doing it on purpose.
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
5. Use "would" not "will" after past verb.
❪✘❫He said he will come tomorrow.
❪✓❫ He said he would come tomorrow.
⚠️Note: Will changes to would when the first verb is in the past.
📔 Extra Tip: "Would" is the past version of "will". It helps keep the sentence in the same time frame.
EX:✔️ She promised she would help. not ❌ She promised she will help.
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
6. Use "might" not "may" after past verb.
❪✘❫Ailsa told me she may come.
❪✓❫ Ailsa told me she might come.
⚠️Note: May changes to might when the first verb is in the past.
📔 Extra Tip: May is for present or future. Might is for past or uncertain future.
😀 Think of it this way If the conversation happened yesterday, the possibility should sound like it belongs to yesterday too.
