石鳖如何长出高碳钢还要坚硬的牙齿
石鳖是一类非常古老的海洋生物，栖息于潮间带礁石区的岩缝中，以礁石上附着的藻类为食。在过去的长达4亿年间，石鳖演化出了坚硬、耐磨且带有磁性的牙齿，硬度甚至超过人类牙釉质、高碳钢、不锈钢以及高温烧结的先进陶瓷，能够高效地刮食藻类。最近，在一项发表于《科学》（Science）的研究中，研究团队结合了先进的材料学技术和生物学方法，揭示了石鳖牙齿形成的完整分子过程。
研究人员发现，石鳖体内的一种名为RTMP1的铁结合蛋白，会经由微绒毛纳米管道进入未成熟的牙齿，并与几丁质纳米纤维结合形成框架。同时，铁蛋白（ferritin）中的铁被释放进牙齿中，与RTMP1结合，在框架中精确沉积，形成高度对齐的四氧化三铁纳米棒，从而构建出超硬且耐磨的牙齿结构。这一形成过程不仅精确控制了纳米尺度的铁氧化物沉积，还展示了生物体在常温下制造高性能材料的能力。这项研究不仅加深了人们对细胞内铁代谢的理解，还为下一代先进材料的合成提供了新思路。研究人员表示，这种生物制造方法可以应用于电池、燃料电池催化剂和半导体等领域，甚至可能推动更环保、可持续的3D打印技术的发展。（加州大学欧文分校）
