📚 Despairing Of Seeking Knowledge 🖋️

📩Questioner:

I am a beginner student of knowledge. I have been attending centers of learning for more than a year, but my memorization is weak, and I have become despairing of seeking knowledge.

What is your advice?

📨Answered by Shaykh Abu Amr Abdul-Kareem Al-Hajoori:

Our advice to you is to continue seeking knowledge. Seek it and do not become weary or despairing.

Despair is not permissible. Supplicate to Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, for Allaah holds the treasuries of all things.

“And there is nothing except that with Us are its treasuries.”

He will open for you He will open for you in memorization, in knowledge, and in understanding. Turn to it wholeheartedly.

We advise you to increase in sincerity, to increase in truthfulness, to increase in earnest commitment, and to make abundant supplication.

Do not rush, for you are in goodness you are in goodness. And even if you were not in that state, were all the imams of Islam memorizers and all of them leaders?

Among them were students of knowledge, and among them were… It is sufficient that you remain upon goodness. If you are striving diligently, then you are upon reward.

The one who is proficient in the Qur’an is with the noble, righteous scribes; and the one who recites it while it is difficult for him has two rewards. This is narrated from ʿĀ’ishah. So yes if a person is exerting his utmost effort, it is not necessary that you become Shaykh al-Islam.

What matters is that you are not playful, negligent, or wasteful. As for being lost on the phone, on WhatsApp, and the like this is what causes harm.

But if you are memorizing the Qur’an, memorizing hadith, engaging in remembrance, reflection, and attending these gatherings, then this is good.

What is it that you seek reward? The reward is already attained.

Do you want reward? The reward is attained. Do not be afraid. You will not emerge at the end of the year as a failure, nor after two years as a failure. No.

Rather, what is blameworthy is that a person is capable, possesses understanding, yet wastes himself. That is what is blameworthy.

Seeking knowledge is for everyone!

📩 Question:

We seek advice for a student that Allāh has given the chance to seek knowledge. She starts to study for a few days and stops for several months, then returns and requests the madrasah to repeat the lessons for her from the beginning. Then she stops and is absent for no reason.

Also we seek advice for the one who has left seeking knowledge with the excuse of not being able to memorise nor understand.

The former (the individual who is absent from their lessons) and the latter (the individual who has left off seeking knowledge because they can't memorise or understand) are wrong.

It is not appropriate for a student of knowledge to allow the shaytaan to enter upon him through this entrance. [No doubt] some people have a hard time understanding, and memorising is difficult for them, but this does not necessitate that you abandon seeking knowledge.

Rather, the Prophet ﷺ has stated that whoever recites the Qur'ān, and recites it with great difficulty, they will have two rewards. As for the one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur'an, he will be with the honourable and obedient scribes (angels).

Are the evidences of the virtues of knowledge general for everyone or not?

Do we find in the textual evidences that no one should seek knowledge except those who possess strong memorisation? Do we find in the textual evidences that no one should seek knowledge except those who possess good understanding? Do we find in the textual evidences that no one should seek knowledge except those who are "intelligent"?

Rather, we see in the evidences that it is upon all of us to learn, whether they be intelligent, foolish, negligent or struggle to memorise.

How many people had much difficulty understanding, then Allāh made it easy for them? Especially if they were truthful [in their efforts], sincere [to Allāh], serious and diligent.

Perhaps a student of knowledge makes a duā by which Allāh grants him his request, and he becomes a scholar or a caller [to Allāh].
