📩 Question:
I'm addicted to my phone and social media, and this has distracted me from various subjects, seeking knowledge, and memorising the Qurān. Nonetheless, I sometimes propogate statements from the scholars on some channels whilst staying on my phone for several hours. Every time I attempt to stay away, I fail. I'd like some advice for myself and others like me.
✏️ Answer:
There is no doubt that this tribulation, which is the addiction to social media and internet apps, is an illness from the many illnesses that affect the heart and attach it to other than Allāh. Time is wasted due to it, and the person doing this doesn't engage himself in reading the Qurān, and perhaps he sleeps past the night prayer and fasting the day.
This is a cause for the ruining of himself, his family, and his kids. Perhaps he does not fulfil the rights of his family and kids, or he may even avoid them, partially or completely, without him realising. Therefore, it is incumbent upon the slave to strive against his soul and to treat himself and his heart from this illness.
This is because he is responsible for himself, his time, and his family. He is accountable in front of Allāh regarding the rights that are upon him. Therefore, it's impermissible for him to neglect his heart, family, and kids and to waste his time in the likes of this.
In any case, we advise this man and anyone like him with several advices.
Firstly, he should make much istighfār (seeking forgiveness), supplication and seeking refuge with Allāh ﷻ.
Secondly, he should ask Allāh to protect him from the evil of this phone and these applications. As you can see, many people from the wicked and unproductive have become addicted to these apps and have given them their full attention.
The Jews, Christians, Rāfidah and others indulge in it also. Therefore, the Muslims should not indulge in it except if there is a benefit, such as for dawah and maintaining ties of kinship. This should be for a specific time period during his day or night. For the remainder of his time, he should abandon and leave the phone.
He should make du'ā.
{ ٱدۡعُونِیۤ أَسۡتَجِبۡ لَكُمۡۚ }
"Invoke me and I will respond to your invocation".
[Sūrah Ghāfir: 60]
Allāh ﷻ takes care of the needs and responds to the invocations.
Thirdly, this brother also needs to sit with the righteous often and accompany the hardworkers, the beneficial people, and those who persevere their time. He must try to sit with them and accompany them, and the majority of his time should be with them.
Fourthly, he should schedule his time and organise his day and allocate a fixed time to spread the goodness and for calling to Allāh on the phone via the channels, as he mentioned. After that, he should abandon the phone; he should leave it at home or in a specific place and then go to his work and seeking of knowledge. If he disciplines himself for a few days, then, by the will of Allāh, he'd succeed in detaching himself from this phone.
