West Africa has Afrobeats. South Africa has Amapiano. But East Africa 13 nations, hundreds of ethnicities, centuries of rhythm has never had a sound to call its own. Until now.
Meet Jua. Two artists. 30 collaborators. 7 countries. 2.5 years of chasing one question: What does East Africa actually sound like when it's not dressed up for Western ears?
The answer is an ancient rhythm so deeply East African that music experts couldn't agree which country it came from. Kenya? Ethiopia? Sudan? That confusion was the whole point.
The album is Chika and the first single is out now on June 1st. East Africa is finally drawing its own musical map.
