Hands-on tests of every RPM lever — lazy load, refresh, sticky units, layout shuffles — reviewed head-to-head with pros, cons and the catch nobody mentions.

Case: A/B testing dynamic floors vs flat floors by geo

What it did: control used one flat $0.10 floor everywhere; variant set per-geo unified pricing rules ($0.80 US, $0.30 UK, $0.05 tier-3).

— Setup effort: 4/5 (UPR rules per geo + A/B)
— RPM lift seen: variant page RPM +11% in US ($16.10 → $17.90), flat elsewhere, no fill loss in tier-3
— Mechanism: the flat low floor was leaving US bid surplus on the table

Pros: captures bidder willingness-to-pay you were giving away; reversible instantly.
Cons: set floors too high and fill craters in low-value geos — start conservative and creep up while watching fill rate.

Lift: ★★★★☆ — Risk: ★★★☆☆
Verdict: geo-tiered floors beat a single flat floor for mixed traffic. Best for: sites with strong US share. Skip if 90% of traffic is one low-value geo.
Fixed-size slots vs fluid/responsive ad slots (the CLS angle)

What it does — both fill space; the difference is how they handle layout shift. Fixed reserves exact pixels; fluid/responsive lets the ad pick a size at request time.

Setup effort (1-5) — Fixed with reserved min-height: 2. Fluid: 1, but CLS-safe fluid: 3 (you must reserve a max-height container).

RPM lift seen — Fluid: +6-12% fill because more demand qualifies per slot. Fixed: lower fill but zero shift.

Pros / Cons —
Fluid: more eligible demand, better mobile fit, but unreserved height tanks CLS and that bleeds into rankings + bounce.
Fixed: rock-solid layout, but you leave fill on the table when the ideal creative size differs.

Verdict — Use fluid, but always wrap it in a min-height container sized to your most common creative. You get fluid's fill with fixed's stability. Never ship unreserved fluid above the fold.

Lift: ★★★☆☆ — Risk: ★★☆☆☆
Best for: responsive templates. Skip pure fixed unless you're chasing a perfect CLS score for a known thin-content penalty.
Myth: a 30-second ad refresh timer is the sweet spot

Everyone copies the 30s number. It's a Google viewability default, not an RPM optimum.

What it does — re-requests a unit on a timer to bill more impressions per session.
Setup effort — 2/5 (one config block).
The correction — refresh should fire on active time + viewability, not wall-clock. A 30s timer on a scrolled-past unit burns inventory at junk viewability, tanking your viewable-CTR and your bid floor.
RPM lift seen — event-based (viewable 30s + tab focus) beat blind 30s by 12-18% on long-read pages.
Pros — same fill, cleaner demand.
Cons — needs a real refresh manager (vs the native timer), more QA.

Lift: ★★★★☆ — Risk: ★★☆☆☆
Best for: dwell-heavy content. Skip if sessions are under 20s — you'll never hit the second impression anyway.
Myth: lazy-load every ad to boost viewability

"Lazy-load everything" is the loudest advice in the niche. It quietly costs you money up top.

What it does — defers ad requests until the slot nears the viewport.
Setup effort — 1/5 with most plugins.
The correction — lazy-loading your above-the-fold unit adds request latency before the highest-value slot, so header bidding finishes after first paint and your top bid times out. Viewability goes up, but eager-loaded ATF usually wins on RPM.
RPM lift seen — eager ATF + lazy below = +6-9% vs lazy-all. Lazy-all only wins on very slow connections.
Pros — bandwidth savings, better CLS below fold.
Cons — fumbled ATF if you over-apply.

Lift: ★★★★☆ — Risk: ★★☆☆☆
Best for: long pages — lazy from slot 2 down. Skip lazy-all if your ATF unit is your top earner.
Rewarded ads vs interstitials on utility/tool sites

What it does — both gate value behind an ad. Rewarded asks the user to opt in (watch to unlock a feature/download); interstitials interrupt unprompted.

Setup effort (1-5) — Rewarded: 4 (opt-in flow, unlock logic, frequency cap). Interstitial: 2.

RPM lift seen — Rewarded eCPMs are very high and, because they're opt-in, they don't tank bounce: +20-35% on tool pages with a natural 'unlock' moment. Interstitials lift impressions but raise bounce and hit Better Ads.

Pros / Cons —
Rewarded: premium eCPM, user-consented so policy-clean and UX-positive, but needs a genuine reward to gate.
Interstitial: drop-in, but interruptive, bounce-positive, frequency-capped by Google.

Verdict — If your page has any 'unlock/download/continue' action, rewarded beats interstitials on both RPM and UX. No natural reward moment? Then a capped interstitial is your fallback.

Lift: ★★★★★ — Risk: ★★☆☆☆
Best for: calculators, downloaders, generators. Skip rewarded on pure article reads, there's nothing to reward.

Google ads

Playbook: Run a clean RPM A/B test
What it does: splits traffic between two layouts to find the real revenue winner, not a vibe.

Setup (effort 3/5):
— Split at the user level (cookie/localStorage bucket), not per-pageview — same reader, same layout.
— Hold everything else fixed: same content, same period, same traffic mix.
— Run minimum 7 days to cover weekday/weekend CPM swings. Two days proves nothing.
— Compare session RPM and bounce together — a layout that lifts RPM but spikes bounce loses long-term.
— Need ~10k sessions/arm for a stable read on a 5% difference. Smaller = noise.

RPM lift seen: the test itself doesn't lift — it prevents you shipping a 3% loser you'd have called a winner.

Pros: kills guesswork. Cons: slow, needs traffic volume, easy to misread underpowered tests.

Lift: ★★★★☆ — Risk: ★☆☆☆☆
Best for: 50k+ sessions/month. Skip below that — you can't reach significance.
Myth: chase a perfect 0.00 CLS score

The "0.00 CLS or bust" crowd reserves dead pixel space for every slot. Often a revenue leak.

What it does — fixed min-heights on ad containers stop layout shift.
Setup effort — 2/5.
The correction — Google's CWV threshold is 0.1, not 0. Reserving full height for a slot that sometimes goes unfilled bakes in permanent empty space, dropping your effective content-to-ad density and your collapse-on-no-fill revenue. The goal is CLS < 0.1 with collapsible fallbacks, not zero.
RPM lift seen — collapse-on-unfill + 0.05 CLS beat rigid 0.00 by 4-7% on pages with patchy fill.
Pros — keeps you green on CWV.
Cons — needs careful collapse animation to avoid shift.

Lift: ★★★☆☆ — Risk: ★★☆☆☆
Best for: international traffic with spotty fill. Skip the obsession if your fill is 95%+.
