On 1 April 1986, the Israeli occupation in Lebanon participated in the April Fool when it circulated false news that Minister Nabih Berri was subjected to an assassination attempt on Ouzai Road by Shiite or Iranian extremists (Hezbullah) and was seriously injured.

They attributed the news to Lebanese radio stations, which caused an alarm and confusion and almost a ‘fitna’ between the Lebanese.

NGO-funded media The Public Source has been sued by the Lebanese Forces party (LF) over an article about LF's past environmental crimes done through Beirut Port.

As tweeted yesterday: “On Friday, March 31, the Cybercrime Bureau, on behalf of the Lebanese Forces, summoned our editor-in-chief, Lara Bitar, to appear for interrogation. (...) The LF was angered by an article we published that drew attention to some of the environmental crimes they committed during and after the Lebanese civil war.”

⋯ The Public Source reported last year how 2,000 tons of highly toxic materials were smuggled from Italy into Beirut Port in 1987 by the Lebanese Forces (LF) militia for $22 million.

The cargo was dumped across Lebanon. After the Civil War, LF took control of the Environment Ministry. Instead of cleaning up the toxins, the state did a campaign of persecution against activists. According to writers Christina Cavalcanti and Annia Ciezadlo, the authorities are still trying to hide what happened.

Frangieh to give Saudi Arabia ‘guarantees’

Marada leader Suleiman Frangieh has travelled to Paris. As alleged by Annahar today, he has given French presidential adviser Patrick Durel “some of the guarantees required by France to offer to the Saudi side” in order to become the next Lebanese president.

The guarantees are that “the work of the reformist government would not be disrupted” (with regard to the economic crisis) and to have the “best relations with Saudi Arabia”. It will be determined whether these guarantees are enough for Saudi Arabia to allow a president backed by Amal and Hezbullah.

“The Iranians are sending their arms to Judea and Samaria and Gaza, and are trying to establish themselves in Syria and the Lebanese border.”

Today's L'Orient editorial is wild with rage about the French mediation:

«Worse, for the sake of sacrosanct “realism”, [France] now openly supports the candidacy of Frangieh to the presidency of the Republic. [...] But how could Emmanuel Macron, who last December still called on the Lebanese to “change leadership” and to “clear off the leaders who block reforms”, find himself being the one to “sell” the Hezbollah candidate to the Saudis and to a large part of the Lebanese political spectrum?

«France believes that to allow the arrival of Nawaf Salam (reformist) to the post of Prime Minister, it is necessary to make concessions [...]. Lebanon today is stuck between two vetoes: that of Hezbollah (and Iran) and that of the Saudi kingdom. [...] The first can hurt, the second can alleviate the suffering.»

The judiciary is investigating the embezzlement of $318,000 at the Lebanese embassy in Ukraine, a judicial official said today (3 April).

Since September, suspicions of embezzlement have been surfacing, while the Foreign Ministry was working on reducing its missions' expenses. Preliminary investigations showed the money was taken from different funds, including “passport renewal fees”, and was transferred to a Ukrainian bank. Ambassador Ali Daher was interrogated several times, and suspended from work.
