We further found that the consumption of bee products for a long period and frequent consumption of bee products per day are associated with telomere length. An increase of year in consuming bee products is associated with a mean increase in telomere length of 0.258 kbp. In addition, an increase in frequency of eating bee products per day was also associated with a mean increase of 2.66 kbp in telomere length. These results suggested that bee products might play some roles in telomere length maintenance.

The relationship between telomere length and beekeeping among Malaysians
The belief that beekeepers live longer than anyone else is present since ages. However, no research has been done to explore the longevity of life in beekeepers. Here, we investigated the telomere length in 30 male beekeepers and 30 male non-beekeepers ...

One of the first was presented in 1957 proposing a particular instrument called the Apidictor. The system presented is composed of a microphone, a vu-meter and a series of tunable analog filters. The idea is to adjust the filters to the specific frequency bands at which bees emit specific sounds (i.e., the piping sound) and then to monitor the activity. https://patents.google.com/patent/US2806082A/en

In 2007, Bromenshenk et al. submitted a patent to exploit the sound emitted by honey bees to monitor air pollution. The main idea is that, when bees are exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of various airborne toxicants, the generated sounds are different and specific for each pollutant. These sounds can be acquired and stored into a database. Then, when a new sound is acquired inside a colony, it is possible to make a comparison with the database, in order to detect pollutants near the colony. For the comparison, first, the spectrograms of various sounds are extracted and then a classification by means of linear discriminant functions is carried on.

In 2012, Brundage et al. proposed a system to detect bees productivity based on sound analysis. The idea was to analyze the fundamental harmonic produced by the bees’ flight, which is in the range between 180 Hz to 260 Hz. The presence of a downward frequency shift in the fundamental frequency corresponds to a flying bee launching from locations around the bee hive entrance. By counting the number of frequency shifts, it is possible to estimate the number of bees which have left the hive during a day, and then it is possible to use these data to monitor the hive productivity.

One of the most recent patents is from Bencsik et al. , who proposed, in 2015, a solution based on previous research on sound emitted by honey bees. The system involves the use of one or more accelerometers, placed at the center of the brood frame. The acquired signal is then transformed into the frequency domain producing a spectrogram. The spectrogram is then processed with PCA to reduce the data dimension. Finally, a linear discriminant function is used to analyze the signal at a reduced computational cost in order to detect events such as swarming or a Varroa mite infection.

Studies about DNA damage prevention:
Honeybee pollen (HBP) loads are a mix of flower pollen from different plant species adhered to by nectar and enzymes secreted by salivary glands of honeybees. The composition of HBP is quite variable and depends on ecological habitat, geographic origin, or even season (Denisow and Denisow-Pietrzyk, 2016; Ares et al., 2018; Bridi et al., 2019). It contains polysaccharides, lipids, proteins, aminoacids, and simple sugars. Moreover, it is a source of minerals (Cu, Fe, Zn, K, Na), vitamins, (β-carotene, tocopherol, niacin, thiamine, biotin, folic acid), and a variety of secondary metabolites such as terpenes, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds (Campos et al., 2008; Komosinska-Vassev et al., 2015).
Phenolic compounds, including flavonoids and phenolic acids, are recognized as important natural antioxidants, also playing a key role in a wide variety of biological and/or pharmacological properties such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, antiallergic, antiviral, antithrombotic, hepatoprotective, and signalling molecules, among others (Kumar and Goel, 2019; Hızır-Kadı et al., 2020). The ingestion of phenolic compounds has been related to the reduced development of chronic diseases, as sustained by epidemiological studies (Ferrari and Torres, 2003; Torres and Farah, 2017; Soares et al., 2021).
In vivo and in vitro studies support the role of flavonoids and phenolic acids in preventing DNA damage induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) (Yonekura et al., 2016; Tasahil et al., 2019). DNA-damage signalling and repair are viewed as crucial pathways in cancer development and/or treatment (Amarowicz, 2016; de Camargo et al., 2018). Phenolics have significant free radical scavenging properties and may protect against cellular damage caused by free radicals, thereby providing precautions against various diseases. Phenolic compounds can inhibit free radical-induced DNA damage and suppress inflammation (Li et al., 2018). Humans do not have the ability to synthesize important antioxidants such as tocopherols, tocotrienols, and polyphenols, thus dietary antioxidants play an important role in maintaining human health (Nishikimi and Yagi, 1991; Adriano Costa de and Renan da Silva, 2019; Soares et al., 2021).

Genomic Stability
Genome health is an important factor that plays a role in various degenerative diseases. Instability of genome is the prevalence of mutation within the genome such as changed in nucleic acid and chromosomal arrangement and also the presence of abnormal number of chromosome in cell. Therefore, several method were used to overcome this problem and one of them is by using natural product such as honey, propolis, bee pollen and royal jelly that is high in antioxidant. Those are products that derive from honey bee and had been used as food supplement to increase the quality of life. Therefore, this systematic review provides the updates on the potential of honey bee products to decrease DNA damage both in in vivo and in vitro approaches.

Glyphosate (GLY) and organophosphorus insecticides such as chlorpyrifos (CPF) may cause DNA damage and cancer in exposed individuals through mitochondrial dysfunction. Polyphenols ubiquitously present in fruits and vegetables, have been viewed as antioxidant molecules, but also influence mitochondrial homeostasis. Here, honey containing polyphenol compounds was evaluated for its potential protective effect on pesticide-induced genotoxicity.

Diabetes mellitus is an endocrine disorder characterized either by insufficient insulin secretion and/or its defective utilization [183]. The antidiabetic/anti-hyperglycemic activity of bee pollen has been previously studied. According to Nema et al., bee pollen administration at 100 mg/kg body weight/day for 4 weeks lowered blood glucose and prevented pituitary–testicular axis dysfunction [6]. Furthermore, bee pollen exhibited a potent anti-hyperglycemic activity in patients with insulin-independent diabetes mellitus (T2DM) [184]. Moreover, thanks to its bioactive constituents, bee pollen exerts its anti-hyperglycemic effect by modulating glucose uptake and inhibiting α-amylase and β-glucosidase activities, leading to the management of diabetes and its serious complications [185].

A double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted in 47 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) to investigate the efficacy and safety of the 12-week intake of food supplemented with honeybee-collected pollen lump extract (HPLE). The participants were randomly assigned to three study groups: placebo or group P (0 mg HPLE per day), lower dose or group L (160 mg HPLE per day), and high dose or group H (320 mg HPLE per day). The maximum flow rate was significantly higher in group H (P0.05), but not in groups L or P. While the residual urine volume increased significantly in groups L and P (P0.05 each), it decreased in group H. There were no HPLE-related health risks or clinically significant laboratory abnormalities found [24].
