The Barabar Caves are an ancient complex of rock-cut caves located in the Makhdumpur Block of Jehanabad district, Bihar, India. These caves are notable for their historical, architectural, and archaeological significance. They are one of the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, dating back to the Mauryan period, around the 3rd century BCE, during the reign of Emperor Ashoka.

Here's how they look inside
Outside look
Granite Composition: The Barabar Caves are carved out of solid granite. Granite is a very hard stone, which makes the precise and detailed work of the caves all the more impressive.
2
Symmetrical Design: The caves are renowned for their highly polished, symmetrical architectural designs. The interiors are smooth and shiny, often compared to the polish of glass. This reflects the advanced level of craftsmanship achieved by artisans of that era. The precision in symmetry not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also serves to amplify the sound within the caves.

Architectural Layout:
The layout of the Barabar Caves typically includes a rectangular hall with a circular dome-shaped chamber (stupa) at the far end. The caves' entrances are usually smaller compared to the inner chambers, which are spacious with high ceilings. The symmetrical architecture is thought to symbolize the order and harmony of the universe, a concept that was significant in ancient Indian cosmology.
