1. Cultural Geography Lens:
Diwali exemplifies India’s cultural diffusion across space and time — originating in the Indo-Gangetic plains as a harvest and victory festival, it now radiates across South and Southeast Asia (e.g., Nepal’s Tihar, Thailand’s Loi Krathong, and Malaysia’s Deepavali), symbolizing spatial continuity of Indic civilization.
2. Human–Environment Relationship: Traditionally, Diwali aligns with the post-monsoon period (October–November) — a time of clear skies, receding humidity, and agrarian surplus. The cleaning of homes, whitewashing, and lighting of lamps reflect seasonal adaptation and environmental synchronization — marking transition from Kharif to Rabi season.
3. Urban & Economic Geography:
The Diwali economy mirrors seasonal urban agglomeration of trade flows — from firecracker hubs like Sivakasi (Tamil Nadu) to sweet and textile industries in Surat and Kanpur. This highlights festive economies as cyclical pulses of spatial interaction and multiplier effects in regional development.
4. Environmental Geography:
Modern Diwali has turned into an urban environmental stress event — increased PM₂.₅ levels, noise pollution, and solid waste generation. ▫️Westernmost Point: Guhar Moti near Narayana Sarovar in Kutch district (Guj)
▫️Southernmost Point (Mainland): Kanyakumari (also known as "Cape Comorin") in Tamil Nadu.
▪️Southernmost point (UT): Indira Point in the Nicobar district of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
📌 Note: Indira Point, formerly known as Pygmalion Point, was renamed in 1985 in honour of Indira Gandhi.
