⚠️ Main Reasons for Denial or Cancellation of a Russian Residence Permit
A residence permit in Russia may be denied or revoked if a foreign national:
1. Submitted forged or false documents, or knowingly provided false information about themselves;
2. Stayed outside of Russia for more than six months in total during a calendar year;
3. Has not acquired residential property in Russia within three years from the date of entry;
4. Is unable to financially support themselves and their family in Russia without state assistance (exceptions apply for those officially recognized as disabled);
5. Has left Russia for permanent residence in another country;
6. Entered into a marriage with a Russian citizen as grounds for obtaining a residence permit, and that marriage is later declared invalid by a court;
7. Uses narcotic or psychotropic substances without a prescription, suffers from an infectious disease considered dangerous to the public, or fails to provide a medical certificate and HIV-negative test result following a medical examination;
8. Personally submitted a request to cancel their residence permit;
9. Failed to submit annual proof of residence in Russia for two consecutive years;
10. Has been deemed undesirable for residence in Russia by an official decision;
11. Or in other cases as prescribed by law.
IMPORTANT: Violations of migration rules, as well as administrative or criminal offenses committed on Russian territory, can also lead to denial or cancellation of a residence permit.
There are also specific grounds — for example, a residence permit may be refused if an individual applying as an investor does not meet the established investment criteria.

You carry your passport everywhere (and it feels normal)
🛂 In Russia, it’s common to carry your passport or a copy with you at all times — for hotel check-ins, train travel, or even buying a SIM card.
At first, it feels strange. But after a few months, you’ll grab your passport as naturally as your phone or wallet.

📌 Today’s topic: Russian Citizenship
How can a foreign national obtain Russian citizenship?
There are three main pathways:
1️⃣ General procedure
First, you must obtain a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP), then a Residence Permit (RP). After 5 years of continuous residence, you may apply for Russian citizenship.
2️⃣ Simplified procedure
Depending on the applicant’s category, some of the general requirements may be waived (for example, for spouses of Russian citizens, native Russian speakers, etc.).
3️⃣ Exceptional procedure
A foreign national over 18 years of age with full legal capacity may apply for Russian citizenship if:
• they have special merits before the Russian Federation;
• due to their profession, skills, or other reasons, they are considered of special interest to Russia.
