MWAKULAKA MUST DIE!!

In the heart of the rolling hills of Taita Taveta, where the soil whispers ancient tales and the baobabs stand tall as guardians of the land, lived a boy named Mwakulaka. His journey was akin to a lone acacia tree amidst a raging savannah fire, struggling to survive in a world seemingly against his…

WHEN THE HILLS WHISPERS: A SORROWFUL TALE OF THE TAITAS

In the cradle of Dawida, where the earth speaks and the skies listen, a volcano of sorrow erupts, not of molten rock, but of grief unmeasured, sweeping through the land in silent fury. Its ashes, not seen by eyes but felt in hearts, cloak our days in shadows dense as night, heralding an era…

BARS, CHEMISTS AND AGROVETS CLOSED DOWN IN TAITA TAVETA IN A CRACKDOWN

Several bars, chemists, agrovet outlets and non-compliant businesses in Taita Taveta County have been closed down following a crackdown by security agencies aimed at curbing the increased rate of drugs and substances abuse in the region.

This follows a multi-agency operation which kicked off on Thursday last week and saw several liquor outlets in the county shut following a directive issued by Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Prof. Kithure Kindiki on the sale of alcoholic drinks.

The operation, led by Taita Taveta County Commissioner Josephine Onunga, targets bars, businesses, chemists, and agrovets operating without licenses and running beyond the stipulated hours.

Speaking on Monday during a press briefing at the County Commissioner’s office in Mwatate after a performance review meeting on the national fight against illicit brews, drugs and substances abuse with security teams from across the four sub-counties of Mwatate, Wundanyi, Taveta, and Voi, Onunga noted that they have conducted several raids that have seen a number of non-compliant outlets closed as the perpetrators were taken to court while others were awaiting their date with the courts.

“In Taita Taveta County, we have challenges of drugs and substances abuse. We have the illicit brews, chang’aa, mbangara, and the second generation brews that are common especially at centres along the highway,” said Onunga,

She said over 200 people dealing in illicit brew have been arrested so far stating that since the raid started, they have been able to get illegal local brews including 1,000 litres of pasha, 2,500 litres of kangara, 5,000 litres of mbangara and 200 litres of chang’aa.

OUT OF SENATOR MWARUMA'S SPEECH

I have taken time to listen to Senator Johnes Mwaruma 's speech at the County Assembly.

Whether he was talking to empty seats 💺💺💺, a house full of students or all the MCAs attended, is none of my concern.

I will only mention some of the points he talked about that I think were of value to Datuzen.

1. The Auditor's Report - Anomalies reported by the Auditor general are yet to be addressed. The auditor pointed out issues such as high imprests, fraudulent Vehicle registration, improper documentation of Goods & Services, extreme rise of wage Bill and anomalies in asset registration.

In the asset register it was reported that the Voi show ground land and Chawia Wusi land have been grabbed by private individuals. No action has been taken against the thieves.

Others issues include unclear CIDP - 5 year County Plans. There are no specific goals and objectives.

CIDP 2 - no clear strategies to ensure Datuzen get access to clean drinking water 💦 and water for irrigation to enable then eradicate extreme poverty.

The senator urged the CA to interrogate the 5 year plan and establish clear targets.

The Covid 19 Scandal - it is not possible to establish whether their exists an ICU center in #TaitaTaveta County as earlier alleged due to misuse of Covid funds. Investigations on Covid 19 Scandal is still incomplete. The suspects are still at large.

Youth empowerment - sport is not the only way of empowering the youth.
Datu Sawazisha Fund is in Limbo. Something has to be done to help the youth sustain themselves economically.

Removal of HELB Loans - May hinder access of education to our children. Bursaries are not adequate for our needy students.

Corruption - Revenue leakages where the digital revenue system was made to fail and a manual system forced to continue operating. The architects if these anomalies are still in office.

More pay to MCAs - low pay is making the MCAs vulnarable to corruption. They should get more pay to enable them sustain their needs hence reduce their vulnerability to participate in corrupt deals.

Drilling Rig - what happened to drilling Boreholes to every Ward after every two weeks. Individuals who misused the Drilling Rig should be brought to book. Allegedly, the Drilling rig was used to drill private boreholes as oppossed to the intended purpose of drilling public boreholes. Some of the private boreholes are now not accessible to the public. Funds generated from drilling private boreholes can't be traced

Water Scarcity - water from TTC Hills flows all the way into the Indian Ocean. Checkdams should be constructed.

#MzimaPhaseTwo - cancelling of the project is a surprise to everyone.

Other issues that the senator mentioned include the Machungwani Land Lease renewal, Msambweni land issues and Human Wildlife Conflicts.

MOURNING AMIDST THE AZURE: A TALE OF STUPID LOVE, LOSS AND NEAR MISSES

There I stood, ensconced in the embrace of Acapulco Bay, my eyes feasting upon a tableau of lovers who, in their radiant bubble, seemed indifferent to the mundanity of the world around them. Their unabashed display, as carefree as the ocean’s whisper, rendered the scene a living canvas, vivid and unapologetically raw. It was…

MY AUNTIE, WAKUJAA AND THE MWATATE MARKET FEES!

By Chughu – Mwai wa Mzinyi

WHEN WE CONVERGE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE HEARSE, LET ME SHARE MY WISE THOUGHTS.

Currently, Ambulance 🚑 services costs Ksh. 39 000 to 40 000 from private firms ferrying patients to Mombasa from Voi.

The Finance Act charges ksh.10,000 for the same (County Ambulance services)

Now since our KAMA fellows intend to establish a venture that would have sustainability and create employment, on this one they ought to…

State Finalizing Historic Framework To Grant Kenya’s Artisanal Miners Access To Mine In National Parks

The government is finalizing a joint operational framework that will provide guidelines on how miners in Kenya’s artisanal mining subsector will be granted controlled access to start mining operations inside national parks.

Principal Secretary (PS) State Department for Mining Elijah Mwangi said selected teams picked to draft the framework were harmonizing the requirements and after putting the final touches on this historic document, it will be ready to be subjected to public participation.

The creation of this historic framework came after a presidential directive that required the mining state department to provide a roadmap on how artisanal miners could access national parks and other protected areas set aside for conservation to engage in exploration and exploitation of minerals.

Experts drawn from departments of mining, wildlife and forestry were picked to work on the modalities of the framework that will allow artisanal miners, for the first time in Kenya’s history, to mine in protected areas.

The PS was speaking during a meeting with three legislators from Taita-Taveta County who had paid him a courtesy call.
