✏️Summarise Your Lessons 🗒️
⬆️As shown in the example here, this is a summary of Lesson One in Sarf (Arabic Morphology). The notes use a tree diagram to visually break down the information for better understanding.
There are numerous benefits in summarising notes and several case studies that show the effects of summarising especially in relations to memory and retention. Such as:
1️⃣Active Recall and Retention:
Studies have shown that summarising information helps students actively engage with the material, which in turn aids retention. When students condense information into their own words, they engage in active recall, which has been shown to strengthen memory.
2️⃣ Improved Comprehension:
There has been a case study which found that students who summarised texts were better able to recall key concepts and details than those who simply reread or passively took notes. Summarising requires students to process and understand the material deeply.
3️⃣ Reduction of Cognitive Load
Summarising allows students to filter out loaded information, focusing only on the key concepts. This reduction in cognitive load can help learners manage more complex content, as they concentrate on the most important points.
4️⃣ The "Write-to-Learn" Effect

Writing your sentences in a different colour can increase your focus and attention. For example using the colour red can grab the attention to the eye due to it being a stimulating colour.

A Point of Reflection:
In one of the conversations I had with my beloved teacher, Abū Atiyah, he shared a beautiful point .
He asked me:
"Did Abū Bakr as-Sidīq author a book?"
I replied, "No."
He then said:
"He didn’t author a book, nor are there any voice recordings, videos, or anything of the sort.
Yet what is the status of Abū Bakr in Islām?
Now reflect—there are people who have authored book after book, but are they remembered or even mentioned?"
He then recited the Āyah in which Ibrāhīm (ʿalayhi as-salām) supplicated to his Lord:
﴿وَٱجۡعَل لِّي لِسَانَ صِدۡقٖ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ﴾
“And grant me an honourable mention among later generations.”
(Sūrat ash-Shuʿarā, 26:84)
He also mentioned the Āyah at the end of Sūrah Maryam, where Allāh says:
﴿إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ سَيَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ وُدًّۭا﴾
“Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds – the Most Gracious (Allâh) will bestow love for them (in the hearts of the believers).”
(Sūrat Maryam, 19:96)
He explained:
"This love that we have for the righteous is a love that Allāh places in the hearts of people—due to their sincerity, their adherence to the religion, and their truthfulness. This is from the honourable mention that Allāh leaves behind for them, just as Ibrāhīm (ʿalayhi as-salām) supplicated:
﴿وَٱجۡعَل لِّي لِسَانَ صِدۡقٖ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ﴾
‘And grant me an honourable mention among later generations.’”
Point of Benefit:
What truly matters is not how many deeds a person performs, or how well-known they are, but rather the sincerity behind their actions and their adherence to the Sunnah.
Indeed, Abū Bakr as-Sidīq (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu) was elevated due to the truthfulness of his heart, which was clearly reflected in his actions. For this reason, he was honoured with the noble title "As-Sidīq"—The Truthful One.
