South East Asia is facing some of the worst floods the region has seen in years
| Support during challenging times and events

With millions impacted across Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. In addition to this, Sri Lanka was hit by floods and landslides this week, triggered by heavy rains, leading to thousands being displaced – with more severe weather expected ahead as Cyclone Ditwah moves along its eastern coast. Our thoughts are with all staff worrying about the safety and wellbeing of family and friends. Find out how to access support if you need it from your educational/work HR and your intranet.

When local, national or global events take place, they can have an impact on us emotionally, mentally and in our day-do-day relationships with our colleagues and managers. You might be concerned about how to support affected colleagues or conscious of whether you are saying the right things.

The aim of this guide is to help you navigate these moments by offering practical ways to access support for yourself and others – while upholding our Trust values and contributing to a truly compassionate workplace.

How to access support for yourself
If you are struggling, you are not alone. There are several ways you can seek support:

• Speak to someone you trust such as your manager or a colleague
• Self-refer to wellbeing services via our health, safety and wellbeing hub
• Join a student/staff network or support group to connect with others and help foster inclusion.
• Raise concerns about inappropriate behaviour to your manager, union rep or freedom to speak up guardian
• Contact our chaplaincy and faith services for confidential religious or spiritual support, regardless of your belief
• Reach out to our in-house counselling service, for a safe and non-judgemental space to talk and reflect

Access your training sessions on the intranet – simply select 'All courses' and then scroll down the page to the dedicated section titled 'EDI'. Ask your manager/tutor to signpost you to the correct resources.

How to support staff and colleagues
Even small actions can make a big difference to someone who is struggling. If you're unsure how to support a colleague, here are some simple steps you can take:

• Speak to staff and listen to their concerns. Use our EDI toolkits for practical tips and guidance on conversations around anti-bullying, microaggression, talking about race, being an ally, and neurodiversity.
• Signpost or refer colleagues to our health, safety and wellbeing hub
• Seek guidance from your senior manager on how to handle inappropriate behaviours
• Visit our managers' hub for additional resources to support your team
