Eclipses and the Moon
- NASA Science

https://science.nasa.gov/moon/eclipses/

The next penumbral phase for an eclipse visible from London will be the "Blood Moon" total lunar eclipse on September 7–8, 2025. The penumbral eclipse begins at approximately 4:28 PM BST and ends around 9:55 PM BST, but this entire phase occurs before moonrise and is followed by a partial and total eclipse, which are the most visible parts of the event.

What to expect:

Penumbral Eclipse: This is the least noticeable part of the eclipse, where the Moon passes through the Earth's outer, lighter shadow (the penumbra). The change in brightness is very subtle and might be difficult to observe without a clear sky.

Moonrise: The penumbral phase will be entirely before moonrise in London.

Most Visible Event: The more dramatic parts of the eclipse, the partial and total phases, will be visible later in the evening, after the moon has risen.

How to see the penumbral phase (and the subsequent eclipses):
Find a Clear Sky: You will need a clear view of the sky, free from clouds.
Minimize Light: Get away from city lights and ideally find a viewing spot with no obstructions.

Be Patient: Since the penumbral phase is subtle, focus your attention on the brighter, more noticeable partial and total eclipse phases that follow.
