UK outlaws marriage at 16 but sleeping around is legal

What happened?

From today (27/02/23) the UK has outlawed marriage for anyone under 18. Adults helping a 16- or 17-year-old to get married - in England and Wales - face up to 7 years in jail.

Campaigners claim the law change is to protect children from forced marriages. Previously, marriage was allowed at 16 with parental consent.

Why is this important?

This isn’t about protecting young people but attacking marriage, while actively encouraging other harms against young people.

For instance a 16-year-old can’t get married but can drink alcohol, get abused on social media, watch porn, have an abortion, play violent games, change their gender, get arrested, engage with multiple sexual partners and even join the military.

So rampant sexual activity is fine, however, making a commitment to a spouse and taking responsibility is now against the law?

Islam opposes forced marriages. But is the only harm to a 16- or 17-year-old when forced into marriage? What about harm they suffer when dumped by multiple partners? What about the harm from sexually transmitted diseases from partners who sleep around? What about harm from the objectification of women in society, alcohol and many other harmful things allowed in the name of ‘freedom’?

This episode reminds us that humans (parliaments) are incapable of deciding the laws that should regulate life’s affairs. We need guidance from the All-Knowing Creator of humans.

The Prophet ﷺ taught us marriage is his sunnah (way) and the only valid relationship in which adults commit to each other seeking love, intimacy, children and companionship - whether they are 16, 17 or older.
