Dreams!!

The importance of dreams is huge for a believer. The dreams from Allah is either a glad tiding or a warning from Allah.

Dreams are a part of prophecy! And it’s either a glad tiding, something Allah shows him for himself or someone else sees for him on his behalf. It can also be a warning from Allah to stay away from something, stop a sin etc., or it can be guidance or advice, for example, to give charity, pay heed to something you’re negligent on and so on.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “When the end of time approaches, the dream of a believer can hardly be false. The dream of a believer is one of forty-six parts of prophecy and whatever is from prophecy cannot be false.”

Sometimes the dream is from Shaytaan. A man came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and narrated that he saw a dream where he saw his head running away from him like a tyre and he was running after it. The Prophet told him, do not let the Shaytaan play with your mind!

So any evil dream you have is from Shaytaan. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said that the bad dream is from Shaytaan. So, whosoever sees something which he dislikes, let him blow to his left side three times and seek refuge in Allah from Shaytaan. Verily, it will not harm him.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم split dreams into three categories, he said: “The most truthful of you are those with the truest dreams. There are three types of dreams:
1. The glad tidings dream which is from Allah (it can be seen by the person himself or someone can see it on his behalf).
2. The distressful dream is from Shaytaan.
3. And the dream which arises from oneself.”

You also have dreams from the subconscious dreams, from the musings of the mind. Shaytaan uses it to play with the person’s mind and it’s also something you are thinking about, on your mind. It’s preoccupied your mind a lot and therefore you see it in your dream.

This is the most important rule when it comes to dreams, unlike what the deviants and enemies of the religion say, there is NO legal rulings to be built or based off upon a dream.

- Shaykh Musa Jibril حفظه الله

NB: Shaykh Musa Jibril حفظه الله mentioned once how he has studied the expounding of dreams for 50+ years of his life and he concluded that the righteous people can often see a frightening dream or an unordinary dream to wake them up for the prayer.

On a separate occasion when indirectly asked regarding this, the Shaykh mentioned that till this date, he wakes up for his night prayer every single day with a frightening or unordinary dream. He sets his mind for a time and Allah wakes him up every single day at exactly that time by the minute!

👉‘Splitting’ – more commonly known as ‘black and white’ or ‘all or nothing’ thinking is a common cognitive distortion and defence mechanism, whereby a person sees the world in extremes – usually all good or all bad.

eg. I’m a terrible parent and she is a perfect parent – rather than recognising that a person can contain differing elements eg as a parent I do some things well but I need to work on other aspects of parenting.

👉Black & White thinking is commonly found in extremist thinking as well as those who have certain mental health conditions – however most of us at some time will fall into black & white thinking especially when stressed ….. so it’s good to try and notice it and work on it in ourselves!

🙏But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But God knoweth, and ye know not". (2:216)

This Quranic verse also instructs us to think deeper and look beyond simplistic binary thinking and to look for the good in what we perceive as bad and vice-a-versa… such an approach helps us move beyond black and white thinking SubhanAllah.

🏋️‍♂️ How do we work on it?

👉 Notice it …. clues are when you hear yourself say or think in terms of should, musts, always, never, perfect, terrible, impossible, good/bad etc

👉 Try and see the ‘inbetweens’ – if you think you’re a bad parent – look for what you do well – I struggle with disciplining my children but they know I love them; if you think your child must be able to do xyz by the time he’s 7 – look to see if he can do x and celebrate that.

👉Also help your child to overcome black and white thinking:

Eg. If your child says I can’t do this work …. point out that they can’t do it yet but if they keep trying they’ll be able to make progress, ask which bit they find difficult and need help with, point out aspects of the work they have managed to do etc.
Eg. If they say ‘I hate maths’ – explore the reasons for this and find out which part of maths don’t they like etc and then explore if there’s any bit they feel they can do and maybe enjoy ... for example they may hate fractions but are ok with division etc

❤️ This will help your child develop their thinking which will have a beneficial impact on all areas of their life such as relationships and way they see the world InShaAllah.
