Children listen with their eyes
I wanted to share an epiphany that I had recently. Of course, everyone is free to agree or disagree, but this is just something I’ve seen multiple times in my own life, so I wanted to share.
A number of young parents tell me that they have their children watch Islamic videos and lectures in the hopes that they will learn and become more “religious.” They try to get them enrolled in the best classes in the best Islamic schools with the best teachers. They give them religious books to read.
All of this is very praiseworthy and important and - insha’Allah (God willing) - parents will be rewarded for their noble intentions. And, insha’Allah, children will definitely benefit.
What I’ve come to realize, however, is that most of the children’s learning and spiritual development happens when they actually witness their OWN parents on the path to spiritual development and learning.
It is a habit in many families I know for parents to play Islamic talks in their cars while driving on long road trips, in their kitchens while cooking, in their homes while relaxing or working on projects. It’s not an assignment; it’s not a didactic moment meant specifically for their kids; it’s a regular part of their plan for learning for themselves.
All of these parents are listening to these talks for their OWN benefit, and the kids just happen to be in the background, picking up gems by osmosis.
Over the years, I’ve seen youngsters who surprised us by knowing the deeper meaning of terms like khushu (presence in prayer), taqwa (God-consciousness), and nafs (ego). I’ve witnessed children who have very spiritual responses to the disappointments in their lives. And I’m convinced that it’s only because they grew up hearing these words as a regular part of their family’s vocabulary and they heard regular discussions about the optimal way to respond to setbacks that they were able to then pull those tools out of their toolkits once they needed to tackle a problem.
When kids hear their parents discussing the beauty of our deen (religion) with their friends with passion, it’s inevitable (insha’Allah) that they absorb some of those passions as well.
When children sit in the masajid next to their parents listening to the Friday khutbah, they learn SOMEthing even if they don’t understand EVERYthing.
When kids see their parents panic at the idea of missing prayer, they learn not only about punctuality but also about the IMPORTANCE of prayer.
When children see parents politely (and quietly) leave from an event earlier than expected because alcohol is unexpectedly being served or because there is mixed dancing, they learn about the importance of loving what Allah loves and hating what Allah hates.
When kids see parents discussing whether it’s halal (permissible) or not for them to financially invest in one project or the other, they learn about the importance of shariah and knowing God’s rulings on what most consider to be the “minutiae” in life.
When children see parents being generous and welcoming and forgiving with people whom they know have been rude or wrong with them (i.e. their parents), they learn about the importance of maintaining relations and how to conduct oneself with civility.
In the past, I’ve heard some parents say things like “We’re not very religious or practicing, but I want my kids to be, so I want them to hang out with So-and-So, go to their homeschooling co-op, be friends with their children…”
So many times we think we have to outsource the teaching of our deen; we want what we think are the best Sunday Schools, the best Islamic Studies teachers, the best religious curricula.
So many times we think that the teaching of our deen is a top-down hierarchy where we are the teachers and our children are our students.
But I have seen the most benefit come from when our kids see us not as lifelong teachers but as lifelong students.
“Children listen with their EYES.”
“Monkey see, monkey do.”
And “I can’t hear what you’re saying - I’m too busy watching what you’re doing.”

I guess what I’m trying to say is that WE have to put in the work of wanting to be the sincerest worshippers possible and our kids have to witness us walking that road with all of the ups and downs, all of the ecstasies and slumps, all of the highs and lows that come with that journey. What they’ll see is that we’re all in this together, we’re all in this world for a little while, and we’re all learning and trying our best while we’re here. Insha’Allah.
