How to say 'No' to your manager (use when appropriate)
"I keep being given MORE work, but I'm at capacity! What do I do??"
The reality is that being assertive & saying "No" at work could completely backfire, especially if it's your manager or boss. It may not reflect well on you, especially if that person isn't aware of your task load (and let's face it, they very often aren't).
So... what are you supposed to do?
Well, a great way to approach things when you're at capacity with priorities and deliverables is this:
1. Positive first response
This demonstrates you're enthusiastic and want to help.
e.g. "Of course I'm happy to help
2. Make the person aware of what's currently on your plate.
e.g. "l'm already working on X and Y which you asked for me to deliver tomorrow. To get this new task completed today, which of the other two tasks can I deprioritize?"
Ask for support. You don't have to try to juggle it all yourself.
Now, it's a different story if being over-loaded is the norm, or the expectation is that you just 'get the job done meaning you're having to put in extra hours because you're constantly at capacity.
If that's the case, you want to raise it with your manager - it could be that you're having time management challenges.
Or if it's a matter of unreasonable expectations it may serve you to actually look for a role elsewhere.
DISCLAIMER:
It's worth noting that there are some industries where it's often expected that you'll just get the job done, no matter how late you have to stay, in which case this approach may not work (or maybe it will only help you with understanding your priorities better rather than not having to complete the task). As always, use discretion & wisdom.
Also, as with any 305 video (or any video or piece of guidance on the internet), it's about the principles, not about using the strategy word-for-word in every situation.
As I always say, take what serves you, leave what doesn't (and use your common-sense which I know you all have) :)
Have you ever struggled with being loaded up with work when you were at capacity?

We are trained for just about every thing we do in life.
Yet, few of us receive any training when it comes to parenting! We find ourselves with children and then wondering (and wandering) what to do next. Some of us may be blessed with parents who have given us an insight into good parenting, others haven’t. So there is a lot of trial and error and learning on the job.
Add to that already challenging mix, we Muslims have to try to raise our children on Islam. That brings in extra hurdles to navigate through especially when we live in a world where Islam (and religion in general) has become strange.
So here goes.
A couple of ordinary Muslim parents living in the West writing about their feelings, thoughts and experiences on the challenges of raising Muslim children.
It’s varied. Some of it is what you’d expect to hear. A lot of it is situational and reflects what is going on around us. All of it, if Allah wills, is about bringing Islam into things.
