Six Lessons of Parenting from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ - Islam21c
Parenting Consultant Nur Choudhury distills six lessons in parenting from a profound hadith of the Prophet (sall Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) with his young companion Anas b. Malik (radiy Allāhu 'anhu)
Notes from Parenting seminar
- Sajid Umar
Dawah:
Parenting is dawah and parents must ensure they understand how dawah is conducted.
• Dawah continues till the day we die.
• As a parent Everyday is a dawah opportunity, and every moment can become act of worship with correct intentions.
Intentions:
Intentions must be renewed daily.
Vision:
Both parents must sit down and put their vision down on paper.
• How do both parents wish to see their children on their death bed?
• Their relationship with Allah, with you, their spouses, community and so forth.
Educate yourself
Never think you know enough in terms of parenting, Islamic knowledge or any other useful Knowledge.
The first word that was revealed was “Iqra.”
Make dua
How often are you making the dua from the Quran for your children?
“Our Lord, Give us, from our spouses and our children, comfort of eyes, and make us heads of the God-fearing.”
Surah Al Furqan 74
Fix your relationship with Allah:
Connect with Allah swt and improve yourself.
Get your priorities straight and give Allah and his commands the first due.
The sahabas produced great children because they had amazing relationships with Allah.
Example:
Haroon Al Rashid [a caliph] commanded his sons’ hair to be shaved off when he found out that his hair was a source of distraction in his son’s salah.

Teaching Our Children Kindness
“Whoever is kind, affable, and easy-going, Allah will forbid him from entering Hellfire.”
Sunan al-Kubrá lil-Bayhaqī 20806
Grade: Sahih (authentic) Al-Albani
Kindness is a commendable characteristic that a Muslim parent should aspire to attain inorder to teach his/her child.
Role modeling kindness is an essential aspect of positive parenting.
What we are teaches our children far more than what we say, so if we want our children to be kindhearted...
1️⃣ Consistency:
We too must be kindhearted and perform genuine acts of kindness on a consistent basis.
A little kindness regularly with a use words of kindness and room for others at all times. Not whenever one mood desires!
“Take up good deeds only as much as you are able, for the best deeds are those done regularly even if they are few.”
[Ibn Mājah 4240]
2️⃣ We must look for opportunities to set an example for children and involve them in creating kind ideas to act on.
When you're modeling kindness, you must demonstrate and ingrain the principle of a golden rule:
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
Prophet saw said:
“Do not treat people but in the way you would love to be treated by them.”
Musnad Aḥmad 16220
Inshallah this rule will create a well mannered Muslim who will also be a good citizen. This child will then be the building block for a solid foundation of society encompassing the virtues of caring, compassion, fairness, justice, empathy, thoughtfulness, and most importantly; respect for others.
Involving our children in acts of kindness will help them nurture the warmth of kindness and develop a genuine heartfelt desire to continue.
The author of the article shares a personal example:
“My youngest daughter and I were having lunch in one of our favourite restaurants when we decided to anonymously pay for someone else's meal.
While we ate, we had great pleasure looking around for a possible candidate and finally decided on a very sweet, kind looking woman dining alone, I would guess her to be in her early seventies. We then made arrangements with the waitress to forward her final bill to us.
Our excitement escalated with anticipation as we anxiously watched the woman attempt to pay the waitress. Her response was exhilarating and priceless as she feverishly scanned the room to see who may had done this.
What made this moment so memorable was the anonymity of it all. It's a wonderful way for your children to get a heartfelt feeling of giving with absolutely no expectation of reciprocal kindness.”
3️⃣ Sincerity
The most personal fulfillment comes when a good deed is not recounted to anyone.
If one boasts about it, it neutralizes the intent and undermines ones personal integrity. We must be kind genuinely for the benefit of others, not for personal praise.
"Actions are according to intentions, and everyone will get what was intended.”
Bukhari

Let your child know that your salary is not what sustains them, rather Allah is the provider.
.
Let your child know that even with the wings, the birds can't fly except by the permission of Allah.
.
Let your child know that rains don't fall because it's rainy season alone, it can fall at anytime or cease at any time by the permission of Allah.
.
Let your child know that you are not the best role model for them, but the messenger of Allah is.
.
Let your child know that there is a Lord whom they should fear and obey.
.
Teach your children not to fear you or the people, but Allah and Allah alone.
.
Teach your children that they don't breathe because there is breeze, but by the leave of Allah.
.
Teach your daughter about the essence of Hijaab and shame, before the world teaches her to slay and pose in selfies.
.
Give your son proper Tarbiyah from the story of Lukman and his son in the Quran before he becomes the DJ and party rider in your street.
.
When your child asks you for their school fees, tell them to include it in their prayers and ask Allah for it, don't tell them to wait till you receive month end salaries, else they will think that the government is the provider and the sustainer.
.
Don't wait till they grow up before you start teaching them the Deen, for your decisions over them may not matter to them anymore at that time.
.
ﻋﻠﻢ ﻭَﻟﺪﻙَ ﺍﻟﻘُﺮﺁﻥ
ﻭَﺍﻟﻘُﺮﺁﻥ ﺳَﻴﻌﻠِّﻤﻪُ ﻛُﻞ ﺷَﻲﺀ
(Teach your child the Quran and the Quran will teach them everything).
.
Oh Allah, help us in regards to our children, and make it easy for us to raise them upon your religion, ameen.
