Cluster 500 keywords by shared URLs, not by words
String-matching groups synonyms that rank on different pages. SERP-overlap clustering is the fix. From a 500-keyword seed we built 41 clean clusters this way.

— Step 1: pull top 10 results for every keyword
— Step 2: two keywords share a cluster if they share 3+ of the same ranking URLs
— Step 3: set the threshold ▇▇▇ 3 URLs = tight, ▇▇ 2 = loose
— Step 4: name each cluster by its highest-volume member
— Step 5: assign one URL per cluster, never two

At a 3-URL threshold we got 41 clusters; at 2-URL it collapsed to 26 (over-merged). The so what: word similarity grouped 18% of terms wrong that SERP overlap caught.

Benchmark of the week: 3 shared URLs is the standard cut line for tight topical clusters.

Tag intent for a keyword list in 4 passes
Guessing intent from the keyword alone fails on roughly 1 in 5 terms. Read the SERP instead. We tagged 1,800 queries with this routine.

— Pass 1: count shopping/product results ▇▇▇▇ 4+ = transactional
— Pass 2: count how-to and listicle results ▇▇▇ 3+ = informational
— Pass 3: check for a local pack or map = local intent
— Pass 4: look for a brand homepage on top = navigational

Distribution we found: 44% informational, 29% commercial, 18% transactional, 9% mixed. The so what: 19% of terms whose words screamed "buy" actually returned guides. SERP wins over wording every time.

Benchmark of the week: across broad lists, informational intent claims 40 to 50% of queries.

Sanity-check a difficulty score before you trust it
Difficulty score (KD, the 0-100 hardness estimate) is a model, not a fact. Across 900 terms it disagreed with manual review on 23%. Verify with this pass.

— Step 1: read the score ▇▇ 0-30 easy, ▇▇▇ 31-60 medium, ▇▇▇▇▇ 61+ hard
— Step 2: open the SERP, count weak pages (forums, thin, off-topic) in top 10
— Step 3: 3+ weak pages = real difficulty is lower than the score
— Step 4: check referring domains of the page ranking 7th-10th
— Step 5: if those have under 20 linking domains, it's winnable

The so what: 23% of "hard" terms had a soft underbelly at positions 7-10. The score never sees that.

Benchmark of the week: a top-10 with 3+ weak pages is beatable regardless of its KD.

Harvest 200 long-tail terms from one head term
Long-tail (specific, low-volume, multi-word queries) is where conversion hides. One seed gave us 214 viable tails with this loop.

— Step 1: paste seed into autocomplete, log all suffixes
— Step 2: scrape People Also Ask, then click each to expand 2 levels deep
— Step 3: pull "related searches" at SERP bottom
— Step 4: run seed + each modifier (best, vs, for, near, cheap)
— Step 5: keep tails with 1+ volume and 4+ words ▇▇▇ 60% survive

From 214 raw, 128 passed the filter. Median volume 90, median difficulty 14. The so what: those tails carried a 3.2x higher conversion rate than the head in our set.

Benchmark of the week: expect 100-130 usable long-tails per commercial head term.
