We invoke you who have all authority and power, the Savior of all men, Father of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and pray you to send healing power of the only begotten from heaven upon this oil, that it may become to those who are being anointed with it, or are partaking of these your creatures for a throwing off of every sickness and every infirmity, for a charm against every demon, for a separation of every unclean spirit, for an expulsion of every evil spirit, for a driving out of every fever and ague and every infirmity, for good grace and remission of sins, for a medicine of life and salvation, for health and soundness of soul, body, spirit, for perfect strengthening. O Master, let every Satanic energy, every demon, every device of the adversary, every plague, every scourge, every pain, every labor or stroke or shaking or evil shadowing, fear your holy name which we have now invoked in the name of the only begotten; and let them depart from the inward and outward parts of these your servants, that his name may be glorified who for us was crucified and rose again, who took up our sicknesses and our infirmities, even Jesus Christ, and who is coming to judge the quick and the dead. Because through him to you is the glory and the strength in the Holy Spirit both now and unto all the ages of ages. Amen.[151]

Tertullian went on to argue that the noblest Christian life was “to exorcise evil spirits, to perform cures, to live to God”[113] What greater enjoyment is there “than to find yourself trampling under foot the gods of the gentiles, expelling demons, effecting cures?”[114] Tertullian publicly acknowledged the efficacy of physical deliverance.

Over the years, Vincent raised up others who were also able to operate in the miraculous. He believed that many among the righteous could express the grace and power of Jesus Christ. Brewer points out Vincent employed miracle apprentices or assistants to carry on the work when he himself was tired out. At such times, he would turn to one of his assistants and say, “Today I have done miracles enough and am wearied with fatigue. Go now, and do for me what is required. God who has bestowed this power on me will transfer it for the nonce to you.” Four hundred sick people recovered their health merely by placing themselves on the bed where St. Vincent died.[104] In his travels, Vincent facilitated over 3,000 miracles, of which 873 were documented at his canonization.[105] He is unquestionably one of the most effective missionaries in the history of Catholicism.
13. the gods made me a wanderer. The word ’elohim, which normally takes a singular verb (though it has a plural suffix) when it refers to God, as everywhere else in this episode, is here linked with a plural verb. Conventional translation procedure renders this as “God,” or “Heaven,” but Abraham, after all, is addressing a pagan who knows nothing of this strange new idea of monotheism, and it is perfectly appropriate that he should choose his words accordingly, settling on a designation of the deity that ambiguously straddles polytheism and monotheism. It is also noteworthy that Abraham, far from suggesting that God has directed him to a promised land, stresses to the native king that the gods have imposed upon him a destiny of wandering.

Baptism as Forgiveness of Sin
30. In baptism God offers and we accept the forgiveness of our sin (Acts 2:38). With thepardoning of sin which has separated us from God, we are justified -- freed from the guilt
and penalty of sin and restored to right relationship with God. This reconciliation is made
possible through the atonement of Christ and made real in our lives by the work of the
Holy Spirit. We respond by confessing and repenting of our sin, and affirming our faith
that Jesus Christ has accomplished all that is necessary for our salvation. Faith is the
necessary condition for justification; in baptism, that faith is professed. God’s forgiveness
makes possible the renewal of our spiritual lives and our becoming new beings in Christ.

In the Northwest Semitic realm, as in Mesopotamia, we find fluidity of divine selfhood and of divine embodiment. Among Canaanites and Arameans, as among Babylonians and Assyrians, a deity’s ability to be more than one person correlates with the ability to be in more than one place.
